Howeling noise on 4.0L intake?

This problem is on an Explorer but it's the same engine as a ranger so I figure someone here might know. A friend of mine has a 4.0L explorer, I'm not sure of the year but it's got to be a late 90's or newer. The engine air intake makes this really loud howeling noise. It is not coming from the air box, I can open that up and listen to the noise coming out of the air hose leading to the intake. I cleaned the IAC, made no difference. I haven't take enough of it apart to see if it is the MAF causing the noise.

Anyone else have this happed? If so, what did you do to fix it. The damn thing sounds like a Moose giving birth.

Mine does that. It's the IAC on mine. Happened after I chopped my airbox all to hell to allow more air in....maybe it's the same thing? It's like a $60 part to replace and it's easy as pie

Damn it. I flooded it with electrical parts cleaner and put it back on once it dried. Is there a better way to clean it more completely or should I just have him get a new one and I'll replace it.

I don't think it's dirt, it's just in need of replacement.

Replace it. I had to do mine at like 50k miles. Took me forever to figure out what it was. 60 bucks is about what I paid for it at autozone. Itz not typically a instock part so you have to order it.

It is the IAC ...
cleaning it wont help..... its worn out ... the valve inside starts to vibrate when moving the air through..causing the hummm... easy fix

intake idle control valve. real easy to replace. itz the solenoid on your intake maifold. Unplug it, remove the two lil bolts, and install the new one in reverse with a new gasket. Pie

Definitely IAC.. it wears out as mentioned..
There is no hardened sleeve or anything.. its just metal
and wears out.
