Got stuck today in the ranger
Went out today to the country to go shoot a coyote that I was chasing on my snowmobile yesterday. I drive off onto a cutline that had hardpack snow from all the snowmobile traffic, I started to turn onto another cutline and hit some soft snow and sunk like 3 feet. Got high centered and was stuck real good. Got really lucky and had a guy go back home and get his chains and a buddy and he managed to pull me out. I am amazed by how helpful and generous people can be.
Can't wait to get some new tires, shouldn't be too long from now. Damn onion skins on my truck are useless.
Question, He had to pull me from behind. I don't have a hitch and there wasn't much he could connect his chain to. Ended up connecting it to the frame underneath. What does everyone else use?

I would have used the frame if nothing else. You have a ball on you bumper? I have been pulled out by that once, but I wasn't stuck bad. You really need a hitch or something to use a s a rear recovery point. If you don't want a hitch go to the local Ford dealership and order a FX4 rear hook. I have a hitch and two hooks built into my bumper for recovery .

Use the frame, or as Trigger said, a hitch or hook. Unless you want to break something that is hard and expensive to replace (well, compared to a hitch or hook), then DO NOT use the rear or front axle as a recovery point.
If I remember correctly, the rear bumpers have holes in them right under the plate. I wouldn't want to use the rear bumper if I was really stuck, but you could get away with it.

and i would avoid using a chain at all cost. could you imagine what could happen if a link broke? or slip off your tow point?

Make sure to get a nylon strap with loops, not hooks. The hooks should be secured on the truck, and the loops go around it.
If you are stuck using a chain or a tow strap with hooks, throw a coat on either end. It'll help absorb recoil, and if it does happen to snap and go flying towards one of your windows, you may shave the window or your head.

I just bought one at a store here where I live. It says it's a 20' tow strap. 17000 lb break strength, use for loads up to 5667 lbs. It has loop ends and no hooks on it. I think it's supposed to be a recovery strap but they called it a tow strap. It's yellow. Will this work fine or should I bring it back and order and actually recovery strap online somewhere? I imagine it would work perfectly fine but I'd like some other opinions.

how bout a come-a-long for those times you get stuck alone?...wrap around a sturdy tree or make a peg anchor point...you then connect the two ends (one to anchor point one to your truck) and start cranking the cable...we use them in the fire service for ditched cars...unless the tow truck is there of course lol.

Never use your axels or your bummper. You'll pull that bumper right off the truck I've seen it to many times! Also never get the bright idea of hooking to your rear shackles that was just to funny.
The come a long is an ok idea but remember it will only pull you a real small distance at a time. Will take forever to get yourself out. Best thing is to always go with a buddy.

i pulled a 2wd ranger off a mound of snow in a parking lot. i dunno how he got there. but i got him off. i also used his bumper. i was surprised he had no points. i have a strap with hooks (i didn't kno better when i was 20) the one hook got stuck on his bumper bolt and i had to go to work. i trusted the guy with my strap and he called the next day when he took the bolt off and dropped off my strap.
question tho, what do you do if its a front wheel drive car/minivan stuck at the side of a road? there are no points? what do you hook on to?

The frame. If you have to, wrap it around.
You can tug a little bit on the bumper if it's a small stuck, but don't trust it.

I had to pull a Corolla out that way, and I didn't like it, but there was absolutely nowhere to tie onto. Like I don't know how a tow truck would even hook onto it without using that same spot.
I've pulled out a Caravan, but that had a solid rear axle, so that was easy, and the same with a Rendezvous.
I remember my old 87 Celica used to have 2 hooks front and rear.
