Fuel Filler Neck - Different years have different parts?

I'm looking to replace the fuel filler neck while I have my bed off. I have an 06 Ranger and the material of the filler neck is a rubber hose. While looking for replacements, I noticed many are a metal variety like this:

Fuel filler neck made of metal

I'm wondering why I have a rubber one while all the OEM replacements I find are for metal? If rubber works, I would imagine it's OK to replace it with a rubber one instead of the metal?

Could be that the original rubber fillers cracked so were changed to metal

The ones I see are all metal for those years: Truck Parts and Truck Accessories

But rubber between filler and tank so both are needed: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-Ford-OEM-...-/181584472562

Thanks - from all of the pictures I've seen, it looks like only the metal part was sold when in reality all I really need is the rubber hose part.
