I tried it the other day, and to take it out all you have to do is CAREFULLY pry it out it has five tabs holding it in, it is VERY thin aluminum and if not careful you will bend it. You could possibly repaint it, but is has clearcoat over the paint and I didn't want to fool with such a small thin piece of aluminum, so I would say you're best bet it going to be buying/making a new or different one or putting a decal on it, I bent mine all to hell when I took it out so I am going to have to fab a new one up pretty soon.

I just would not tamper too much with the air bag cover and the emblem is right in the center
anything hard over that, even though it splits, could become a missle in the cab should the bag deploy
I will defer to you John regarding Ranger air bags - you did have the unfortunate experiance
still and all -- chest or face it would hurt to be hit by anything hard flying off the bag cover
