Edge, Fx4, XLT....difference?

Hi all, i am new around here and have a few questions....
im in the market for a ranger to take miles off my Duramax. I have been shopping and want an 03 or newer ive decided. I would perfer a 4.0L, has to have 4wd and has to be a manual.
When ive been searching the price seems to be a premium for the FX4 trucks.
WHat exactly is the difference from a FX4, FX4 Level 2, Edge, and XLT model?
I have been hanging around here a bit and have figured out what different mods im going to do, just want to know if there is a BIG difference in these different models?

xlt is more basic bottom of the line. which is what i have. edge is more like a good work truck package, rubber and all. fx4 comes with the 4.0 and 4.10 gears tow hooks, its pretty much the offroad package. fx4 lvl 2 is just a step up to more cool stuff from their. if you want a good truck for a little money go with an edge (which come in 2wd or 4wd)

The FX4 lvlII 03 to present has a 31 spline axle, 4.10 gears, Torsion limited slip, #1 torsion bars, Bilstein shocks, Alcoa rims and most have manual transfercase and transmission.

Edge models are the same as any 4x4 model: 28 spline axle, electric transfercase, yada yada yada...

alrighty, that makes sense, i figured it was like the z71 chevy package just wanted to figure out what all it had added to it. sounds like fx4 is going to be my choice then :) is the torsen unit the same as like what dodge puts in their rear ends on the 3/4 to 1 ton side? aka, it locks up using torque vs rpms?

Trim levels are as follows(in order of base to fully loaded):

XL
Edge/Sport
XLT
Fx4(still an XLT but completely unique)

Edge models recieve color matched flares(if styleside) and bumpers, vinyl flooring, and tons of cab configurations(2dr reg cab, 2dr xcab, 4dr xcab), interior options(buckets or split bench, power options, til/leather,cruise, radio), drivetrain options(3.0L or 4.0L), wheel options(15" or 16" in varied styled), bed style options(6' styleside or 6' flareside(stepside). 2wd models get the same front suspension as the 4x4 models. It's basically a 4x4 w/o a tcase or axle.

XLT is a step above adding carpet, chrome bumpers with grey textured valence and grey textured flares(if styleside). The same options as Edge, but comes with higher end door panels if equipped w/o power options. Also, the 2.3L skips the Edge models and moves onto XLT. Also carries the coilspring suspension from the 2wd XL onto the 2wd XLT.

Fx4 ('02 Fx4 or '03+ Fx4 Level II)is one step beyond with special black interior, special upholstery on the standard buckets, all have 4.10 gearing, have a stronger rear axle basically out of a F150, if '02-03 equpped with manual trans, you got a manual transfer case. Special towhooks, black exterior plastics(instead of grey), special wheels with 31x10.50R15 BFG All Terrains. Standard with 4dr xcab, 4.10, limited slip, bilstein shocks, buckets, power options, leather w/ tilt wheel, cruise, etc....basically, Fx4 Level II got all the options as standard

Truck pictured is a '03 Fx4 Off Road....that would be one slight step above XLT, yet one big step down from a Level 2. It is an XLT option that includes the xcab, 4.0, 4.10, mid and aft skid plates, and a limited slip rear end. Not the beefed up 31spline rear end though, or the torsen differential. Just your standard 28spline 8.8 w/ a tracloc limited slip.

There used to be a 4x4 Off Road model, that ended in the '02 model year. The Fx4 Off Road package for '03+ merely replaced the 4x4 Off Road package. Basic name change.

Just remember, '02 Fx4 Off Road = '03+ Fx4 Level II. '02 4x4 Off Road = '03+ Fx4 Off Road.

yeah, mine does have the 4.10 with limited slip but I don't think its the torsen, the fx4lv2 came with a little more not that much though, better shocks and the torsen lmtd slip and manual t-case. and some stuff in side, I drove one and couldn't tell much a difference between mine and the lvl2 except the price difference, but it's your choice were just trying to help

Unless you have an 08/09 FX4. And with them, there isn't an lvlII. They come with 16in rims, Rancho shocks, and some other stuff that's skipping my mind.

If I had it to do all over again, I would be looking for a low mileage, '03 or newer FX4 Level II with twin sticks! By far the best Ranger ever built.

One (or three however you want to look at it) is the front, mid, and rear (for the ever so important fuel tank) skid plates.

Also the two-tone paint. Basically the top half is the paint color of your choice while the bottom is some sort of graphite.

Why not be cool like me and dream about a '03 LII for 7 years, then slowly build a XLT into a '03 LII with an '01 vin number?

lol.

I always thought Edge was a step above XLT for some reason...when you list it all out, makes me kinda sad. I always knew Edge was basically a "sport" pacakage (due to monotone paint scheme), but I guess mine is just special, since it is loaded out. Well, loaded minus rear doors, 4.0, and jump-seats. I always saw it as Edge > XLT.

Sometimes I hate my factory jump-seat delete option!

If you look at the brochures, ford lists it like I did, and I totally see why as well. When ford came out with the Edge in late '00, they were geared toward younger croud. I believe advertisments had motocross attached to it in '01, and other 'young sports' if you wanna call it that.

Factory jump-seat delete option? ? really? you dont have those little fold outs where the doors should be? wait....reg cab? lol.
