I have to agree with you D., when I was at the dealership getting my brakes done (couldn't do it myself, way too much corrosion/rusting together to not get it off without an air tool), I strolled over to the new Rangers. And you couldn't hit the nail on the head any better than you did....The colors are limited, the interior looks cheap, and the $800 for A/C isn't helping the window sticker appeal either. Way too plain for my liking. And as you also said, there are 06/07's for at most $10k at auctions......

Why Ford has decided to degrade the Ranger is beyond me (Phasing in the F100?), the new Mazda's don't seem to bad though......

Something else to think of, I hear of people going to the dealer and getting killer deals! Yet I price it on Ford.com and its not a deal at all!

Best bet is to go into the dealer and see what "real" for sale price is.

Agreed. I "built" my XLT online and then went to the local dealer and ordered my truck, which MSRP'd for $19,700 - when my truck arrived 2 months later I paid the discounted price of (which included 2 cash back offers and "employee pricing" discount) only $15,400.00 that we agreed on 2 months earlier.

A Toyota Tacoma has a $15,900 base price, but I think that comes with limited slip. Tint and AC would add another $1185, but I doubt that the Toyota has enough "standard equipment" to justify the extra $1,700+ added to the base price. You can't even get power windows or door locks on a 2008 Tacoma unless you upgrade to a larger cab - no matter what level of trim you pick on a regular cab, you still get manual locks and window cranks. At least that's what I understood when I was thinking about a Toyota.

Here is a little car sales weenie "tip".

The end of the month is when you want to "deal". Often times they have incentives based on amount of cars sold during the month.

So.. if sales weenie Joe can break the 15 unit mark, the commission they "earn" is greater for all the units they sold that month. It's a "chance" on the buyers part. But if you walk onto a lot on the 23rd-25th of a month you stand a better chance of saving a little than at other times during the month. Not all dealerships do it this way. But they in someway try to motivate thier sales weenies to "move units".

As far as used vs new.. in this 2008-2009 market used is the way to go IMO.

Yeah... your best bet is always to find one on the lot. I built/ordered mine in July of '07, it was on the second load of '08s to come into the local dealership. MSRP is like 27K on my truck but because I buy through fleet and had a few incentives the price was closer to 23K. I had to take whatever deals were offered at time of delivery so I didn't get any of that high $ stuff 'cause it was still so early in the year. I love my truck though and couldn't be happier with it. I had to laugh when I went to the lot and they were asking 27K for the twin to mine (with a few different options) just about a month ago... they finally sold it though.

My biggest thing about getting a new one was I wanted fully loaded except with manual trans and I wanted a mint truck with warranty. I figured I'd start from scratch and keep it forever....

MSRP doesn't mean much. Go see what dealers are selling them for.

The Ranger has actually had the smallest drop in sales recently. That's why Ford extended production into 2011. The Ranger seems to be the ONLY truck unaffected by recent economic events. All the others had double digit % sales drops recently.

They didnt admit it but they also held onto the Ranger because it helps them meet EPA regulations for the required fuel efficiency for the fleet. The Ranger helps compensate for them big pretty Super Duties

You can get a GREAT deal on a 2008 F-150, or just about any other full size. Some dealers let basic XLs go for a little over $10K. XLTs can be had for as low as $15K.
