WEll as most know my CEL has been on for months...it is a vacuum leak..Well most everymorning my truck, when cranked, "Misses' for about 10 sec, until it finally kicks in...Well today id never kicked in until like 30 min later...now in OD when i presss the accel is shakes and misses like a ****...Only then though...Then at a light it kinda sputtered here and there....now i replaces the plugs and wires a few months back also....

So i go at 1 PM, to get a diagnmostic run "$59" **** dollars, and hope to get it fixed, i pray its not a head gasket or fuel injector..Cuz i cant replace them, i know they wil for MUCHO.....

So help me out guys qucikly, if you can

It's either ignition or possible an injector.

wtf all this is happening with my truck too. It misses on start up, it just started kicking and sputtering while in drive. Not to mention that the check engine light just came on this morning. One thing with my truck it had the miss during start up for about a month now. I also have changed out the wires and plugs twice since august. I will be changing the coil pack, wires, and plugs this next month. I hope that will fix it.

sorry if ths is is a thread jacking

Have you actually read the codes to see what it is? I don't see why you are going nuts trying to randomly replace and repair every component of your engine without fixing the one thing that you know is a problem.

^^whoa buddy im not going crazy

I had the code read at autozone, he said it was a vacuum leak...That was like a month ago, and my light had been on a few onths before that..

Well i got my muffler welded back on yesterday, and taking my truck today to see whats wrong with it.

The guy said its not my coil pack, or fuel injector, and it was something wrong with my evap, but he couldnt be certain cuz i had no muff and he said the air/fuel ration was probably messed up...

and same here i am not going crazy on mine either and this is the first time my check light came on. so i was fixing the problem i knew. well then i got my codes read there is a miss fire in cylinders 3 4 6. i looked at the corresponding terminals on the coil and those terminals are black. the miss fire is in the coil.

ranger 1999 good luck and all the best in trying to figure out your problem. please keep up dating

well my truck has screwed itslef up....Today i crank her up, and its missing like usual, then it doesnt even out and its sputtering bad and when i floor it it sputters worse....Oh and my check gage light was going off and on and my oil pressure gauge was droping back and forth....Then the gauge light and oil gauge went to normal...

So im gonna take her and get worked on tommorrow, so long re-gearing and 01 conversion.

well got it back....Shop said my vacuum leak is not present anymore, and that #3 was misfiring.....SO hes like we'll change your plugs for like $300+ and i said just replace #3 spark plug...So they did cost $84 to change the plug and the diagnostic..Now everything is running great..i hope it was just a bad plug..I changed the plugs and wires just a few months ago.......Anyways

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I've had similar issues with my '99 with a 4.0. Started off like a misfire, changed plugs and wires, all was well for about 7 months, then it did it again, both times throwing a code for misfire cylinder 3, multiple misfires. Changed #3 plug and all was well for a couple weeks, then started the missing on cold startups for about 30 seconds again. Couple mechanics said the 4.0 was bad to crack heads especially 98-00 models. I didn't wanna believe it, but the final test was to loosen the radiator cap and let the pressure off when I parked it for the night, then tighten it in the morning and start it.... sure enough it ran fine if I did that (no antifreeze leaking in the cylinder).
Tore it down this past weekend and found the hairline crack between the valve seats on Cyl. 3. Soooo.... got the new redesigned heads ordered from Clearwater Cylinder Heads and all the gaskets from Ford... and the pushrods and lifters wear down pretty quick in these also, so ordered those too... so for about $1500 give or take and a couple of weekends of work should be up and going again :)
Expensive, but its one of the easiest modern motors I've seen to put new heads on luckily. I am lucky enough that mine is one that doesn't have the EGR system on it, so even easier to mess with.

yea i have no clue what i am doing. plus i like blowing money that i don't have on things i don't need. the first set of plugs and wires were creating one hell of a light show in my engine bay. then the second set were arcing to the block. and now i got cel codes telling me that half my motor is miss firing and i got black terminals in my coil. which tells me that the coil is bad. all the past plugs and wires have been oem. so what the hell 130 bucks for a coil, wires, and plugs i cant beat that. plus i don't have to pay for labor ha

if Dave is right i do not have to worry there too. i have a transplant motor that i can pull the heads off and have them checked out.
