Added an LED in the headlight ****. Pics included.
I was installing wireless entry into my truck this weekend since I already had two door actuators and figured for $35 for an avital 2101L why not...
I started Friday and between doing that, fixing gauge cluster leds, rear end blocks and new shocks, mounting the ultra gauge, and the headlight **** mod it's been a busy weekend.
I always wondered why ford never illuminated the headlight switch itself. It's nice that the 3 icons above are lit up but why not the ****. I always wanted to light the **** up. I first tried to use fiber optic cable to take light from the current LED that is there and route it into the **** but it didn't work out well and I was over complicating it for at least an hour. Finally I thought why not just put a damn led in the ****? *poof* Should have done this first.
So I started out with a small hole that I drilled into the **** then I used my jewlers/gunsmith files and slowly took the shape of a square LED. All I had was green so I basically was testing with that and the ****. Figured out how to get it to work properly and not snag on anything and then just as I was about to order some red LEDS I ended up finding one! score! Now it matches my HVAC with green icons and red *****.
Anyways, I tapped the orange wire/black stripe wire at the headlight switch which gives the power to the headlight indicator icons at all times, and then tapped the black wire. Now my headlight switch is illuminated just as the icons are all the time. Make sure to use a resistor incase your led isn't rated at 12v since the voltage is 12v from that wire. I didn't have a clue what the voltage was on my LED but figured it was 2.3v at 20mA... so I used a 510ohm resistor.
Here are some pictures. Definitely a small but unique mod that I haven't seen anyone do on here before. I think it turned out well :-)
