1993 Ford Ranger xlt 4.0 CRANK NO START
Hi guys, new member here. This while be long as I’ve been working on this truck for months with no luck but I’ll try my best to shorten it. A couple months ago I suddenly lost power while driving. Gas peddle to floor with no acceleration. I was able to creep home at about 15-20 mps if that. For days after I could start it but it would idle rough and cut off. I then started it and tried to move it, after driving toward about 10 ft it cut off and I pushed it back. So then I began my rookie mission by throwing parts at it. And I’ll post each part below. First I changed the spark plugs and it started up like a champ and it sound great as I gave it gas then 20 secs later it cut off and just cranked til the sun went down. I ran a spark test, fuel pressure test in the on position/ not started, compression test in cylinder one which read upwards of 170 psi almost 180. Now it just cranks. Recently I found if I hold the tittle WOT it will start for half a sec an cut off. I took this truck to the Ford dealership last month and they had it for a month and couldn’t figure it out but they didn’t do anything but go over what I already changed and charged my $850 for basically changing my oil and the starter. Beyond mad. So here I am again working on it. I have a code reader reading 116, 159, 129, 114. Please help me and let me know what I’m missing. Spark plugs are wet when I pull out also. I have photos and videos of what it sounds like.

Welcome to the forum
Unfortunately you have replaced too many parts to do a proper diagnostic, so we need to start from scratch
20 years ago "new" part meant "tested and working"
"New" now means "YOU TEST IT, and we will replace it if it doesn't work"
1993 Ranger 4.0l
Does it have a CAM sensor or EGR system?
This matters, generally these were only on Calif. sold Rangers in 1993
Start from scratch
You have a CEL(check engine light) on the dash, it will come on with key on, that means computer(PCM) has booted up, no CEL = no PCM
Crank engine over, CEL should go OFF, that means PCM is getting a Timing signal from the EDIS-6(spark module/crank sensor), CEL on = no timing signal
If CEL comes on, and then goes off when cranking, do the 50/50 test
Remove air tube from upper intake, you can leave it off, just make sure fan can't hit it
Open throttle and spray fuel into the engine, i.e. gasoline, ether, carb cleaner, ect......
Crank engine over
If engine starts and dies then spark is good but no fuel from injectors
If engine doesn't start then No Spark from EDIS-6 module
50/50 instant results
This should narrow down the next tests
The original symptom, loss of power driving but not stalling out, reads like clogged fuel filter or fuel pump issue, even "bad gas"
Have you ever looked at the gas in the tank?
Siphon some out into a clear glass container and let it sit over night
All gasoline has some water in it, water is heavier than gasoline so will settle to the bottom of a container(like a gas tank, lol), and will of course cause running issues

And the gasoline should be transparent NOT cloudy
Also gasoline can only be stored for 6 months, so if gas in the truck has been there longer that 4 months, drain it and use it in the lawn mower or ??, and put in 5 gal of fresh gasoline, and make sure gasoline is 5% or 10% ethanol, that will help if there is any water left in the tank or fuel system

You池e definitely right. I知 headed to the truck now. I値l start with 50/50 then I値l check the gas. That can definitely be an issue. I can稚 remember where I got the gas from last a couple months ago an it prob was some cheap gas from a random station. Give me a couple hours and I値l have some updates. Thanks so much for the steps to follow. Be back soon

I wanted to come back and thank you for your help. After following your steps I actually traced my crank no start to a clogged Catalytic converter. After I changed prob $1k in parts and a $800 Ford dealership bill for basically nothing but a oil changed I figured it out. Cutting off the cat and I値l be back on the road. Thank you
