I did them mine when I had my bed off for my axle swap. I figured might as well do it when I had the opportunity.
hey were SOOOO bad, when I started to but them with a sawsall it went through like a knife through paper. Literally.
The bolts were the hardest part. 4 1/2 angle grinder with 2 or 3 cutting wheels and a grinding wheel should do it. You'll need a hammer, a punch or big phillips head screw driver, and a chisel or a big flat head.
Sometimes off roading, towing, hauling, and rough roads can "accelerate" the process of them braking down. My driver side had a good chunk missing after I hit a big pot hole that also snapped off my middle leaf.

Don't think it woulda mattered much since the beds on these things seem to handle quite alot of weight.
My right side shackle was busted for at least a coupla weeks before I finally took the time to figure out exactly what all the squeaking was. In that time there was some towing and at least one trip from NH over to Monticello, NY and back with a motorcycle strapped in the bed. Didn't notice a thing other than some squeaking from the leafs contacting the underside of the bed.
Whoops!
