How-To: Clean K&N Air Filter
Supplies
K&N Recharge Kit
Paper Towels
Sink or Hose
Dirty K&N filter
Step One
Lay out what you'll be using
Step Two
Spray the Air Filter Cleaner on you filter, do it a lot if yours is filthy like mine. let stand for 10-15 minutes
Step Three
Rinse off in light water
Step Four
Set on Paper towels and let it air dry. i let mine sit over night
Step Five
oil the filter one row at a time. don't go too heavy but just enough. make sure the entire filter is red in color. and that's it

You did not mention that the water should only run through in the opposite direction of air flow. This keeps the dirt from working into the filter. It is also good to know that heat drying the filter can damage it by causing the fibers to shrink. The filter should be more pink, rather than red, after application of the oil. Too much oil is bad.
It is also a good idea to knock of the excess dirt before applying the cleaner. I just tap it against something flat until most of the excess dirt is removed.
