Trans sensor/speed sensor.

I have a 2006 ranger, 4cyl/automatic. It doesn't shift into overdrive. I pulled the engine code (po718) and I want to check the simple things 1st. Fuses, sensors etc. Can somebody tell me where the speed sensor and tcm or trans sensors are located? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum

You will have a 5R44E automatic, in a 2006 Ranger 2.3l
In 2006 it only has the internal ISS sensor(input shaft sensor), the TSS(Turbine Speed Sensor) was eliminated in 1999.
And it will have an external OSS(output shaft speed sensor) at the rear of trans

Input shaft speed is basically engine RPMs after torque converter, OSS is the RPMs of drive shaft, the difference between these two sensors "tells" the Computer the ratio of the Gear selected, i.e. is trans in 1st gear(2.47:1), 2nd gear(1.86:1), 3rd gear(1.47:1), ect.........., and is that the correct gear as selected by the computer, it is feedback for the computer

P0718 - Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Computer did not use these codes
P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0716 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0717 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal

The codes a computer does not use should also be looked at to narrow down the area of the issue

So sensor is working or computer would have set code P0717
And the sensor is reading correctly, when it is working, or computer would have set P0715 or 716

Sensor signal is just not there all the time, so P0718

This would usually indicate a loose connection, at the transmission connector or at the PCM(computer), a bad wire would probably set another code because it would not be a good signal in between no signal.

So I would start there, disconnect battery, then disconnect trans wiring harness and have a look inside at the connectors, make sure all are clean and dry.
Do the same at PCM connector, remove it and look inside.

There is a connection inside the transmission, back side of the external connector, you can drop the pan to access it.

To replace ISS sensor the transmission must be disassembled, almost completely, so basically a rebuild to replace this sensor

Also might be worth a call to a local Ford dealer with VIN in hand, to see if there is an upgraded Firmware/Software for your model PCM.
It could be a software "glitch" that shows up and has been fixed with an update

Ron, it's been awhile since I've worked on the ranger. The code that comes up is a p0715. Also have po128 (low coolant temp) which I am changing out the thermostat/housing. Wasn't sure if the po128 had anything to do with the tranny issue. I am gonna check and clean all sensor and connectors and see if that will help. Could you tell me which fuse if any to check? Thanks.
