Tranny Roars in Neut and Slams into gear

Hi, I have a 93 ranger 2wd 4cyl and 5sp manual trans. After a long drive the other day 5th gear started ratteling bad. When I stopped and tried to put it back in gear it made a bad grinding/roaring sound in neutral and when I put it in gear (with some force) it slammed into gear. After that I could get it to go and it shifted but with a lot of noise. Any expertise would be appreciated.
thanks

The clutch slave cylinder is done.
The good news is you only have to pull the transmission as you don't have 4WD.

Be sure to check the pilot bearing when you yank the trans. When they go bad, they make shifting pretty tough, just like a failed slave. Does the rattle go away while your driving? A bad pilot bearing usually doesnt stop making noise.
