Reverse quit working in 1999 4x2 Ranger

I was at the store today, getting ready to leave actually, when I put it in reverse there was a loud "clank" then reverse quit working. I waited until the car in front of me pulled out and tried drive. It seems to work fine. I didn't push it going home and now I'm wondering if I can drive it at all? Also, what could it be? ...and how do I fix it?

1999 Ranger, 4x2, AT w/ overdrive, 3.0 6cyl

Any advice will help....

Thanks!!!!!

My trans did this, best I could figure out was the reverse sprag clutch (one way clutch) broke. It is buried deep in the trans meaning it needs a complete rebuild to fix.

Upside is I drove the truck with no reverse for nearly 10k before I swapped it out. Just have to be creative when you drive.

Thanks blhde. Guess I'll be doing some creative driving until I can swing a rebuild.

Another thing you will notice about that broken sprag is that you will no longer have engine braking in first, but first will still drive forward(L1).

Having total rebuild done. Fiddled finances around to swing it now. It's a good truck and still cheaper than having a new truck payment every month. Figured when I get it back I'd Seafoam the engine too. Anyone have good directions for that?

Thanks again!!!
Glad I found this forum!
