Icon8 My 99 Ford Ranger won't reverse?

Sup, folks. I have a 99 ford ranger, 3.0 v6 automatic. Today I was driving down the highway and wasn't paying attention, but ran out of gas. -_-, anyway..went and got some gas and came back, and went to reverse out of the parking lot, and felt this kick, like I hit something. I looked around and didn't hit anything, but got back in to continue to reverse and it just kept revving when I hit the gas, but didn't go anywhere. All the other gears work, but the reverse doesn't. Weird..but I'm kinda confused with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have manual engine braking in first?

Go about 25-30 and shift into L1. The rpms should jump up and the truck will slow down.

If it doesn't theres a problem with the low/reverse servo. Some times its the two dollar gasket. other times its more serious.

Well that's another problem, lol. My cable started getting off alignment (not sure what the cable is called..) When I put it in park, it shows that I'm in reverse, and when I drive it looks like it's in second gear. But I can shift it down to second gear. It won't go to first. Would that work?

The indicator is isnt always a sign the trans cable is out of adjustment. Maybe its just the indicator cable.

You should feel a detent for every selection.

This can be a bit overwhelming of a job. I have torn into my trans twice and swapped it out once. There is a huge relief when you start the engine, put it in gear, and it moves.
