I picked up some goodies at the JY!

Yep I finally got some 4.10 axles. They came out of an 02(pictured below) with 80,000 miles on them. The gears look great to. I went their planning on buying the L/S axle they've had since late summer and they had it 2 weeks ago when I was there but of course when I got their on Friday it was sold... So I ended up getting an Open diff. Some pics:

Went to it with the wire wheel last night for a couple hours(pain in the **** lol). All clean though:

And the truck it came out of:

Now for some questions. I'm going to be painting it today so I'm going to get some Acetone but have never used it before. Do I just put it in a spray bottle and spray it all over the axle and let it dry? And what kind of paint do you guys recommend? I'm painting it black just not sure what kind of paint to use.

Thanks,
Clay

Looks like it's in decent shape... wouldn't be too hard to fix.

I'll trade you my 4.10 rear for your level 2 rear.

Pinion bearing is about done in it. Easier for me to replace the whole thing. It's not a level II neither.

Awesome, Clay! You'll LOVE 4.10's!!

That does suck though about you waiting on that axle only to see it sold! I had that happen just last week. Called on Monday for a part, told 'em I'll be there tomorrow to pick it up, I go in there on that Tues only to find out my part has been sold. They said they'd get me the same part from another one of their yards at a $20 bump in price!! WTF. So I went to a different yard and nabbed it for the same price I was quoted that monday. I was effin' pissed because I drove an hour away for it, my name and number was on the item number in their inventory, yet they sold it to someone else? WTF.

/end rant!

Downey, do you even read? Powerranger HAS a 2002 Fx4....aka 31spline Torsen. AKA 2002 Fx4 Off Road = 2003+ Fx4 Level II. Powerranger was talking about how his pinion bearing is toast and it's easier for him to just swap axles. You can go back to your hole and hide now...

Thanks for getting him set straight Shane. I want a Level 2 axle pretty bad but the only ones I can turn up on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market are all 3+ hours away and $450-600. I don't want one that bad. I just saw a massive U-pick-it yard in KC thats open 7 days a week. I have to go up there on Business this week. I'm going to stop in and hope and pray I find a Level 2 for the picking. I have my tow hooks now and I think all I need is the axle and gauge cluster. Then I should have just about the whole Level 2 setup.

LOL yeah kind of. It was raining and lightly hailing this weekend. I had faint dreams of getting massive hail damage to my truck to the point it was totalled. Then I'd go 02-03 Twin stick shopping. Unfortuately it didn't come true.

Thanks Shane! I didn't leave them a # for it or anything But I told them that I was really interested a couple times and I'd be coming back in the next week or so to pick it up. Guess they didn't want to take the chance. I can't wait to get these in though! and I lol'd at your comment to Downey.

I know what you mean. I only need foglights the L/S 4.10 and the 4x4 offroad stickers for mine to be considered the offroad version. Guess I'll just have to add a E-locker or something down the road...

PAINTING…
Get a good rust to steel binder, like POR-15 or others that are out there.
There products need rust to work so don’t clean it too much.
POR-15 also has a Chassis Black Paint to go over the Rust Paint and they work together.

POR-15 may not be the best choice but get something like it or at least get the Dupont Metal Etching Primer.

I'm using the Duplicolor rust fix first then Duplicolor primer sealer then Duplicolor mid shine black. I just got done with the Rust fix. I thought about Por-15 then saw the price and Duplicolor spray seemed much better lol. Thanks for the tip though!

Not sure any of them really work as well as they should.

Good move on the rust fix and keeping with the same manufacturer, best chance to make it work.
I like the DuPont Product.

Luck,

I like my from bare metal to Rust Oleum auto grey primer with a few coats of John Deere Blitz Black equipment enamel. No scratches, chips, rust, nothin'. Of course, i'm certainly NOT in any rust belt state. lol.

^^ Shane Blitz black is expensive around here cost me $20 for 2 cans when I did my skids. I plan on cleaning up my frame this summer and whatever I paint my axle with is going to be the same stuff I paint my frame with so I want to stick with something less expensive lol. I do like the look of Blitz black its just to expensive

OUTCH! Here it was about $4.50 a can a few years ago....now it's upto almost $7 a can. I'm going to start seeing what kinda deal I can get for buying them in bulk....a box at a time. Maybe even just say screw it and get a Quart or Gallon and really shoot the paint.
