how much merc V for a trans fluid change?

Awesome...thanks!
I'll be completely flushing out the old tranny fluid in a couple months from now...this thread was helpful. I'll be doing the pump in/flow out method at home with a 4 empty milk gallon containers. I've done the basic trans pan removal, which is only 3 qts at best. Time to get familiar with that auto trans cooler!

Im going to suggest a larger container than milk jugs. It flows fast enough your going to make a mess.
An oil change place will charge about 125 to do this, IMHO its worth it.

im sure mark knows what he is talking about.. plus i have heard this method and done it before without problems. i know this is a little different than what the topic is and i dont want to invade but i have to change my clutch and i need to get some fluid. my trans is manual and my owners manual says that i should use mercon trans atf.. does this mean mercon 5? or mercon based.. im a little confused on this just by the wording. but anyways.. mark did you go to school somewhere?? im just asking for my personal knowledge.. im at NTI right now

I have been quoted $165 before, and I thought that was nuts (about 2 years ago). My sister has been quoted around $180-ish, and I thought this was ridiculous as well. Besides, I don't trust em. If I can rebuild an engine, throw on suspensions, change all the other fluids in my cars/trucks, this can't be THAT bad. Maybe a lil messy, but we'll see... *wink*

A 5 gallon bucket will be a better choice. You can use a funnel later to fill the milk jugs if you choose. Typical carry in policy of the auto store limit you 5 gal anyway.
Last time I paid for this service. It was 125 plus tax, with mercon V fluid not mercon plus additive. Obviously YMMV.

Yes a 5 gallon bucket is what you want to use. I recent changed mine myself used about 14 quarts.
Dropped the pan changed the filter filled it up, pulled the cooler lines, started the truck, as the fluid went out of the lines i added fluid through the dipstick. I stopped when I went though about 8-10 quarts. Then checked the fluid level and added what was necessary.
