Foreign Ranger Differential - EXPERT ADVISE !

Hi Everyone:

I´m pretty new on this drive train mods, so this is the very start of a journey to find the right locker for my 2wd, I have several pictures of my rear axle in this album:

Ford Ranger Forum - The Ultimate Ford Ranger Resource - fitsector's Album: Looking for the right Locker for my 2WD !!!

The locker that I will like to buy is the Lock-Right from Richmond, but need help to determine the exact specs of my axle.

So Far I have this:

Manufacturer: DANA
Axle Ratio: 4.56
Cover Bolts: 10
Model: 44-3 ??? (this "-3" its driving me crazy ´cause I can match this with any application guide)

missing information:
- Confirmation on model
- Spline Count

Since my truck is the Latin America Version of the Rangers and was manufactured in Argentina I need to double check this before buying something.

Thanks in advance.

Ford put Dana 44s in most of the foreign rangers. Not sure what your spline count would be, I'd guess 30 spline though.

Probably a Dana 44 with 30 splines. I thought that is what all foreign Rangers get, but could very well be wrong.
Can you find a bill of materials or a tag on the axle itself. Might have better luck going with Dana on this one and bypassing the Ford numbers.

Try and phone your dealer with the VIN. They should be able to decode it if they are willing

Thanks to all for the replies.

I have called to the manufacturing plant in Argentina, and gess what?, just like "buckgnarly" said, they only can provide the ford part number, (Damn ! I spent 20 hours in internet just to get the phone, Ford dealers NEVER gives you the phone numbers of the plants so it was a very hard investigation work ! LOL)

So next step: I will get directly to Dana.

I´ll keep you posted guys

I think you´re right Alex, D44-3 seems to be the short version of "Dana 44 3 Series", by the way, how you figured out to get your exact differential make and model?, maybe we have the same one?

We have the same differential. I have been looking for a diff cover for that differential which doesn't have the rubber plug. The rubber plug tends to break and then all the diff fluid is gone. It has happened to 3 buddies, all with the different Ranger models. If your truck is under warranty, Ford will replace it, but if not, then you might be in trouble.

i have that dana 44-3 on ny truck never had an issue witht he oil plug :S probably it fells cause its old or cut so it slips open...

i had truble also.. the dana 44-3 means its a dana 44 with a series 3 carrier. wich is a carrier for - 3.73 gears, theres the carrier break point. then coes series 4 carrier for dana 44 that itis for 3.92 ges and up.

you sure ur truck comes with series 3 carrier and 4.56 gears? if so the gears u have are "thick gears" in that case you should buy a locker for gears 3.73 an lower to keep the same gears. if your not realy sure just open ur dif cover and on the side of the ring (la corona) it should say what gear it comes with. if u have a series 3 carrier u need a series 3 locker, and u use thick gears for 3.92 and up gears, but if u install 3.73 gears u need to get the standard gears.

oh wait yeah i remember now. in argentina for the 2wd trucks they offer 4.56 gears (remember i latin america we use the small mid size trucks as work trucks.

you nd to get a series 3 carrier , so u should get just that a ocker for 3.73 gears and down as u already got thick gears..

pretty sure thats the way it goes...

no my trucks 4wd so ford argentina didnt offer 4.56 gears. so i had to get thick gears for the rear as the carrier is the same. so i had to buy them apart . but thats what the dealer told me when i asked that they had 4.56 gears for the 2wd utility ranger trucks. but if it still got the series 3 carrier you just need to get a series 3 locker, or as i told before a 3.73 and down carrier

Roberto, Many thanks for the information, thik I finally got it what it means a "44-3" Axle. Today I called to Ford Manufacturing plant General Pacheco in Buenos Aires argentina and they give me the supplier phone number of this axles:

DANA Talesol, this plant is located in Uruguay. Since today is holiday there I will make another call to this guys tomorrow, with this I think this issue will be completely close !

Thanks to all for the replies !

No way out !

Finally reach one of the Engineers at the DANA plant that manufactures my axle in Uruguay.

It is confirmed that my axle is a Dana 44 Series 3, but this model came with the Axle ratio 4.56 (kind of weird) maybe a special order for this LATAM Rangers.

About the locker I had bad news !!! due to the location of the speedometer /ABS sensor on the axle If I place a locker inside the diff I will get in my dash a failure warning and my speedometer will be idle !!! all of this due to the obstruction of the sensor caused by the locker

So If I really want the dash warnings working properly and my speedometer working I will have to pass to this locker option and maybe look for a new entire axle that already came with the locker and this sensor relocated.

I´m attaching a picture of the signal cable that goes out from the diff wich is the one related with all of this.

Thanks to everyone for your advise !!

My friend Al, I think we will have to loook for other options bro :(

How would a Lock rite mess up the spedo? It only replaces the spider gears, not the carrier. How does the spedo work? Can you get a pic from the inside?

It's weird that your diff and my diff, despite the fact that is the same, have different arrangements. For example, yours has the abs sensor thing thru the cover, and mine doesn't. Plus, that spring over the diff...

Look around here: Club Ranger Maybe, since they are from Argentina, they can give you some info on that locker. I don't think is possible that there are no lockers for our trucks.
