i recently failed my state inspection (needs all brakes and lower passenger side ball joint). the garage said that the rear axle seals need to be replaced too. does anyone know if this is required (New Hampshire)? im doing the repairs myself and want to know if i should bother with new seals. if theyre obviously leaking then i suppose i should change them, but i'm guessing the garage just wanted an extra buck (they didnt know i was doing the work when the told me what failed)

if i do replace them, is it possible to just jack up the one side i'm working on higher than the other so i dont have to drain the differential?

also, for rear shoes, i'm thinking i have 10" but i'm not sure. if this were my brake drum (it's not, but similar) would i have 9" or 10" shoes?

 

to replace the axle seals you have to remove the axle shaft from the differential which requires, removing the diff cover, the crosspin and the axle "C" clips, then slide the shaft out. Remove the seal, put the new axle seal in and re-install.

 

Dude thats sounds like Bullsh!t, who checks for all that crap?? All they do hear is plug the OBDII in and do a quick look over, dang do you know anybody that can pass you legit?

That stuff sucks. I am glad Indiana doesn't have inspection bull crap.

 

We only get a visual inspection of the emission system and a sniffer test. I don't see it as too bad.

 

ya, NH is pretty strict when it comes to this stuff. the truck has 145,xxx miles, and the brakes have been rough lately, so i'm not too upset about having to replace them.

i didnt even think of the 'c' clips, so obviously i have to take the diff cover off. thanks for that piece of advise
