Cold Morning, slippy trans

so I had a used trans put in about 3 months ago that only had 64,000 miles on it. a 4r44e if anyone's wondering. yesterday I saw the o/d light flash for a moment then I shut of the truck and started it back up, no issues. I get up for work this morning and it wont shift into reverse. I try drive and it barely engages, fully slippy. so I shift it into first and it finally engages. then I pull it back to reverse and it still too slippy for me to want to drive it. then I cycle it again. I finally get it to catch in reverse and drive and I get a flashing overdrive light. everything feels fine in the trans right now and I checked the fluid level and the color and its still red and full. My only guess is the pump is draining and not filling back up in the morning.

any ideas?

Did u get a warranty on that used trans??? Because , it sure sounds to me like u are gonna need to use it.......... Reverse requires the most pressure to engage, hence the reason why transmissions lose reverse before other gears first....and as long as the engine is running the pump in trans is pumping fluid, so doesn't matter what happens to pressure once u park the vehicle. Unfortunately, in your case it sounds as if u will be needing a rebuild or warranty that trans out....I hope u got a warranty when u bought that used trans......good luck

I do not know if my shop got a warranty from the trans purchase, but my repair shop did say they would stand behind the transmission if it were to giv e me trouble.

that being said, today it worked just fine.
I think I'll stop by my repair shop and see what they think, maybe schedule a day for them to look at it and see if maybe it just needs the fluid flushed or something

Yes, it sounds to me like they did get a warranty on it........that's great, for u!!!! Please do get it in there and explain what issues it has given u...., I'd imagine there should be a code or two that is stored in the Ecm memory....of course we're talking about a high dollar scanner, not the typical one the average 'joe' would have.....I don't know if u are aware of this, but although they said they will stand behind the trans, u maybe on the hook for labor charges all or some......Good luck keep us posted!!!

oh I know I "might" be on the hook, but they also have my explorer in for repair that I would say they're 65% responsible for causing the issue. I'm going to push they do this one under warranty (0 cost) or I'll have to start shopping for a new repair shop. The amount of return business they're getting from me on the same issues is getting out of hand.

I'm leaning toward two issues having not seen the codes.

1. the fluid is contaminated or the wrong viscosity
2. they didnt clean the cooler good enough from the old transmission and got gunk from the cooler in the valve body

now it's only happening on cold mornings (happened on monday, not on tuesday, but happened again today, wednesday) I scheduled and appointment on saturday and am keeping a close eye on the fluid and the engagement of the trans to ensure it doesnt get worse. (it's my only vehicle at the moment with my explorer down with a stuck lifter)

notes for my self (I had a conversation with a dyno tech at ford livonia transmission)

1 drop the pan and change the filter
2 strain the fluid
3 reuse half the fluid
4 be aware there could be chunks in the torque converter so I may have to repeat
5 disconnect the battery and reconnect to relearn the shift pattern (but this is CAN only and unlikely affects my 99)

Took it in for repair yesterday and they found a code for bad range sensor. I had to pay for a replacement, but i got him to throw in a transmission filter change just for peace of mind, he even let me see the used filter and it wasnt too bad, but the transmission only has like 72k on it so its nice to know im somewhat keeping up with the service points.
