Either 5r55e or a 4r55e. There is a trans code letter on the drivers door sticker. You never told us the year or what vehicle you have. On your door sticker there will be a letter for the transmission. Goto this link and see what you have. https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...AutoTrans.html

Also for what it's worth. The tranny in your picture is from a junk yard. That paint marker on it is not factory.

Its 1994 or older A4LD
You can tell by the NSS(neutral safety switch) location above shift rod, long cylinder nut with white top and 4 or 5 wiring pins

In 1995 Ford changed trans model number to 4R and used a DTR sensor on the shift rod itself instead of NSS

Its 2WD
And looks like 3.0l Vulcan bell housing bolt pattern, from 3 bolt starter motor, so that would make it 1991 to 1994 model year

The A4LD, 4R44E/55E, 5R44E/55E are almost identical on the outside, and on the inside for that matter, but are not interchangeable because of computer software for each model year
So this could be used on 1991-1994 Ranger with 3.0l and 2WD

4R44E/55E image here: http://www.charlietranny.com/4R55Eds.JPG

Black unit on shifter is the DTR
Also has a 16 pin wiring plug just in front of that
A4LD had 3 pin plug in

Sorry for the misleading info in my last post. Looked like my 5r55e. But you do have a trans code on your door sticker.

Its understandable, Ford didn't make it very easy that's for sure

A4LD, 4R and 5R are the same transmission so look alike and share same case/casting numbers as well for the most part

Unfortunately Ford used Trans Code T on door sticker for A4LD and the 4R models
5R did change to Trans Code D

44E were for 4cyl or 3.0l V6
55E had larger over drive drum and was only used with 4.0l engine
