Automatic Transmission in 02 ranger edge 4x4 super cab
Ok so I bought this truck knowing there was a problem with the automatic transmission and when I put it in any gear I’d have to rev for around 5 seconds before it would engage into the gear. Recently the truck has set for 4 1/2 months and when I put it in reverse it engaged right away then in drive it engaged right away until I left if the gas and then reapplied it it reved for maybe a second then engaged again. Any ideas?

You have a 5R44E or if a 4.0l engine a 5R55E transmission, they are the same inside
Put some "Transmission fix" in it and drive until you can't any more.
All automatics run on fluid pressure, there are no "gears" like many visualize or like a manual transmission has, there is a Planetary gear set that has several ratios
There are Clutches that engage and disengage planetary gear set and brakes(bands) that hold the planetary gear set and thats how the different ratios are selected
Clutches and bands are controlled by ATF Fluid pressure, routed thru the Valve Body of the transmission
This fluid pressure comes from the main pump(front pump) that is driven by the engine via torque converter, higher engine RPMs = higher pressure
To engage a forward gear you need about 120psi pressure, Reverse needs above 160psi
What you describe is a loss of pressure, you have to increase Pump speed and pressure, to get it to engage.
This pressure loss is usually in the Valve Body, leaking gaskets and seals
Over time this lower pressure causes the clutches and bands to get worn faster, like "riding the brakes" in a car and "riding the clutch" in a manual trans
Since you don't know how long this has been going on its a crap shoot to just try and repair the pressure issue, but up to you
"Trans fix" fluids swell gaskets and seals so can temporarily bring pressure back up...............IF thats the only issue
You can pull out the valve body, without pulling out transmission, and then test and inspect solenoids and seals, and replace the gaskets
And hope the clutches and bands are still OK
