Welcome to the forum

You have air in the clutch system but that's not the big problem

You may need to rebuild the transmission, black ATF came out

First you can't get it into any gear because you probably put the shifter in wrong.

Put Blocks around one tire so vehicle can not roll!!!
Pull out the shifter again
Look down inside shifter and you will see 3 "slots" on the 3 shift rods/rails

These 3 slots need to be lined up, centered, that means transmission is in Neutral
If you don't do this then when you put the shifter in the trans will be locked into a gear, maybe TWO gears, so not shifting and maybe no moving.

Look at last picture here: Shifter Bushing Replacement : The Ranger Station

It shows 2 of the 3 slots lined up

You can move the slots, shift rods, with a screw driver, someone may have to rock the truck back and forth to get it "out of gear" so slot can be moved

If you lost 5th gear while driving but had 4th gear, and also didn't have 1, 2 or 3 when slowing down, then INPUT Gear was stripped, which means rebuild, it isn't common but does happen with the M5OD-R1
4th is the only gear that isn't powered by the INPUT Gear, its a direct 1:1 ratio so just a sleeve connection from input to output shafts, try 4th if it works but not the others then you know the problem

Used M5OD-R1(M5R1) is not a bad gamble, but you do need to match the engine and 2WD or 4x4, these are specific to M5R1, no adapters possible

EDIT:
I see you posted this twice???
Anyway in the other post you said you have a 2.3l engine in a 1999 Ranger, which there wasn't, 1998-2000 Rangers had 2.5l engines, or V6 engine
Assuming 2.5l 4cylinder
Then you will need an M5R1 from a 1990-2000 Ranger with a 4cyl engine, 2.3l or 2.5l is fine, NOT from a 2001 and up Ranger, will not work for 1999
2WD as well
