5R55E is delayed while shifting into drive. HELP!?

Hey everyone! I have had a couple of rangers over the years, and recently purchased a 2000 ext cab. I love the truck to death, but the transmission has me stumped and I am getting a little frustrated with it. The problem I am having is that it takes about 7 seconds for it to go into drive. It doesn't matter what gear I am going from when I place it into drive, it still takes about 7 seconds and most of the time when it does go into Drive it will kind of "Bang" into gear. I have been reading up on problems like this for the last week, and I am kind of confused as to what I exactly need to do from this point on.

As I started looking into the problem, I realized that the transmission fluid was fairly dirty, and looked to have never been changed. I pulled the pan off, replaced both the valve body gaskets(which were both brittle and blown out in a few places) and the reverse servo gasket. I then proceeded to putting in a new transmission filter, putting the pan back on, and doing a complete transmission flush using the correct fluid. After I was finished it seemed to be about 25% better, but still takes awhile for it to go into drive.

If anyone can please lead me in the right direction as to what I need to do next, I would greatly appreciate it! I have read that it could be the EPC solenoid to?

Again, any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

Reply to Devon on Delayed Engagement

Devon:
I have a 97 with the same problem I’m a little ahead of you on the research I’ve done all that stuff that you done same result, little improvement but still have the problem. My next and last attempt to fix this problem will be to have my friend replace my servo pistons the seals on those get hard and dry out from the heat and leak one of the problems it causes is delayed engagement however that’s not necessarily the only problem. I’m going to have my friend do the job because I am old and shakey and if I should drop one of those band levers it’s a tear down to fix. It’s going to cost about $200 to get the job done 150 labor and about $50 for the parts one problem is there’s three or four different sizes of the Pistons so I have to Take it apart and then order the correct size so the truck will be down for a couple of days. It’s going to cost about $200 to get the job done $150 labor and about $50 for the parts. My friend says he doesn’t have any confidence that this will fix the problem he has built hundreds of these transmissions over the years. I hope he’s wrong on this one. Good luck with your project if you find a solution please post it so I can fix mine the trucks not worth a rebuilt transmission that would cost $1500-$2000 and the little truck is worth just about that. So if that’ll fix it we just going to drive on until it quits. Everything else works great AC works for tranny My name is Larry you can PM me at 706-975-2701 below is a picture of the project since that picture the whole front end has been upgraded with chrome grills chrome headlights and a little hood ornament.

shifts great just that annoying delayed engagement that keeps pissing me off. U can PM me @ 706.975.2701. Name is Larry. I’m in Atlanta...

Economists unite

You have a truck in OK or better shape which is worth upgrading (body panels etc.) and you conclude it's not worthy of a refreshed transmission?
You say the transmission would be $1,500-$2,000 and the truck is worth $1,500-$2,000....and because these numbers match, it isn't worth it?

What do you think a replacement truck would cost?
Go out truck shopping. You may rethink your "formula".

In many cases a rebuilt transmission should be considered a maintenance item. Be thankful Rangers are conventionally lain out.
This scenario with a FWD car would be much more expensive.

Just repair/replace it. Bite the bullet and drive on!

Value of 97 Ranger

You’re probably right but I only paid $500 for the truck and the guy delivered it to me
