the 5 speed is more computer controlled. would probably require some rewiring. would probably be easier to swap the rear gears. i run 3.27s in mine and love them on the high way. 2300 rpm at 70 mph

Wirelessly posted

I'm pretty sure you'll need a new engine harness, pcm the aluminum shaft. Just re gear it

The a4ld has overdrive and is nearly the same as the 5spd just weaker parts.

To me it sounds like you are missing 4th, esp with with a 3.48 rear gear.

FWIW, I cruise 21-2200 at 70 with 3.73's.

It doesn't sound like your even getting into 4th gear. I have a 5 speed manual and I'm only hitting 2500 cruising at 70. if i left it in 4th, which is equal to your 3rd gear (1 to 1 ratio) then I'd be running near 3000.

Late model transmissions are fully controlled by the engine computer and the 92 has mostly hydraulic controls. A swap like this would be a giant can of worms and would not solve the problem anyway. The new gear of the 5-speed is added between the earlier 1st and 2nd, not tacked on as a taller overdrive.

Judging from your avatar, your revving problem is the combination of short gears and shorter than stock tires. Something like a 3.08 ratio or larger diameter tires should get you closer to where you want to be.
