EGR and parts diagnosis DOHC 4 cyl.
Hi everybody, I'm getting the same poor gas mileage as some others out there, so decided to clean all sensors associated with the system, and replace my plugs/wires. Problem is, the Haynes manual doesn't exactly show what sensor is what, or how to get some out. From what I gather, the EGR and PCV valve is pretty important to proper running, but it appears to be a &^%$h to get out to clean, as it runs down the back of the block. I'm posting some pictures hoping that someone has done this before (the EGR/ PCV), and can confirm that #1 is the EGR, and #2 is my PCV valve.

Oh. That's the PCV valve. I think.
So, not seeing any pictures on here of where the PCV valve might be, I re-read the Haynes and took off the splash guard again, and I think... (hope? Pray?) that right up against the block is the PCV valve. (where the red circle is) can anybody confirm this? does this piece look familiar to any dohc owners out there?
I have to say after getting the splash guard off, it isn't a great design, the amount of crap that gets caught in the plastic section (where the mud flaps are on the Mazdas, anyway) between the wheel arch and the front door can only lead to body rot. I scooped out about 3 cups of sand and dirt that were right up against the metal. If you plan on keeping your truck awhile, this might be a good place to clean out (see pic #2)
Still looking for the elusive EGR....
