Icon5 2.3l Oil Pan Replacement

2001 Ford Ranger XL 2.3l (DOHC) RWD
Im trying to Replace my oil pan, Chilton says I have to remove the engine. It looks totally possible if I jack the engine up a little bit.
However I cant really find a set of steps to follow. Im not sure about a gasket or if this is at all possible without engine removal.

Can I do it without engine removal?

Do I Need a garket?

Is there a how-to/guide/video?

Is there something else I should definitely do once I have the oil pan off?

Thank you in advance!!!!

The problem is that you can't raise the engine enough to lower the oil pan down enough to clear the oil pump pick up screen to slide the pan back, also transmission/flywheel/flexplate is in the way, it hits the tunnel after raising a inch or so

You could drop transmission and then raise engine higher

With trans out you will want to replace rear main seal, and rear coolant line on the back of the head, its hard to get to if it leaks
Also check EGR system closely, also hard to get at.

Hi RonD, I took my 95 Ranger for an oil change. When it was done the mechanic said the oil filter assembly is loose but not leaking. Is there gaskets i buy for this and is it easy to fix.

You should post questions in your own thread

yes, just tighten the large bolt, seen here: https://asavage.dyndns.org/ftp/Aeros...dapter_03b.png

Hijacking someone else's thread to ask about a totally different problem is not very considerate.
You should start your own thread.

I just replaced min on my 1990 ranger 2.9 l of course the cross members and trans wont allow you to just drop the pan and pull it out so get ready for a job. First drain the oil and unbolt the intake hose. Then unbolt the cooling fan shroud and just lift it up till its loose. Then you going to undo the transmission mount and both motor mounts ( note the passenger side you will need a 18mm socket and a swivel head rachet ) after all is loose place a jack on the bell housing an jack it completely up till you top out . Meaning the intake is going to hit the top of the fire wall use a Ratchet strap from the transmission to the rear in this way the motor will not shift forward. Once The motor and transmission is as high as you can get it Place blocks in between the motor and the cross member to keep the motor up because you're gonna have to remove the Jack that is on the bell housing to be able to pull the oil Pan out you are have just enough Room to make sure to get all the old gasket off and clean everything up Real Good. You don't have to but I used the blue gasket maker The blue gasket major The blue gasket maker to hold the new gasket in place the simply slide the man back in put the bolts in but one use a couple threads so the the gasket is strait then use the Torque Pattern to tighten them down You wanna follow that to make sure that you get a good seal and remember you don't have to use all your might to tighten the bolts down because too much force can cause the seal to either leak or strip the Bolt threads May not be as likely on the newer vehicles. It's definitely a job but it will save you $900 in labor. Also while you are doing that you can change out the oil pump a and make sure the pick up line screen is clean. If you have any questions please feel free to get ahold of me through my email. Good luck . Yes it is a good thing to have more than one Jack
