I opted to break out the dremel and make my own hole( on the driver side, way up behind the dash) Use a rubber grommet to prevent any metal rubbing through the insulator, and accidental shorting/welding in the future.
Others simply poked a hole in the rubber boot around the steering shaft, and pulled it through there.

I think you're over thinking it Jim. It's just as simple as checking both sides of the firewall to the best of your ability and drilling a hole. The higher you can get the more it'll be out of the way. Mine was pretty much in the middle of the steering shaft and the main wiring harness. Just check both sides before you drill to be sure you have at least 2-3 inches from any wiring or other equipment.

I've been doing this for my nitrous leads and I have one problem going through the same grommet as the clutch master cylinder and it's been bugging me.
If your clutch master cylinder fails you are screwed unless you have installed inline connectors so you can unplug your wiring. Otherwise you will be cutting your wires to get the thing out.
I plan on drilling new grommet holes when i do my emergency lights and siren wiring. I'll mostly likely pull the wires out of the CMC grommet and use a new one.

I used to have a couple of wires through the clutch grommet. When I installed my alarm, I needed to add more wires and decided to tidy things up. I ran the wires through grommets installed in holes drilled through the firewall above the factory bulkhead connector. While I was drilling, I added some extras holes/grommets for future mods in various sizes and plugged them temporarily with bolts.
