It's not made out of regular MDF, theres a LOT of work involved. The box costs about 300 dollars, and I'd pay 600 for the sound it puts out. I had a box for the same subs and same exact amp and it did nothing compared to this. I tried SO hard to get the same sound, I just can't do it.
If i were you, I would use slot ports. Buy a few of them...I will give you the PN for a website (they are 4" aero ports) and build yourself a box. I can get you some good specs to it. It seems like the kickers love the aero ports as much as the type r's do. I've done some experimenting.
Just come to the south florida meet...it's not that far
Really though, if you want to do some experimenting, I'll try and get some blueprints to a few boxes for ya, I know people that compete, and they can build some dang good boxes. I'll PM em if youd like! IIRC, they charge 5 dollars for box plans.
Or you can contact Mark Potts and get an 8" port and build my box (except with MDF) and see the outcome. He sells em for like 50 dollars

Hope I don't sound like a ***
It's actually not which is better, to be truthful. He says this all the time, and I paraphrase this, "mdf showed no difference in results, and particle board (when treated) is stronger, lasts longer, and holds screws better, and a heck of a lot cheaper to boot"
I don't mean to sound like an ***, but I highly doubt a regular MDF box with an 8" port (to my specs) could even come close to what I'm hitting. I dont' mean to be cocky, but I'm definetly up there as far as DB's are concerned. Especially with a pair of 110 dollar (on ebay they are) speakers. Most people can't hit what I'm hitting if I handed them a 12" MT with a 2500d.
Your right about the sealant, over time, it is supposed to "eat" the glue that holds the cone to the surround, I've never heard of/had a problem with it though.
I'm actually not 100 percent sure what he uses to seal/coat his boxes, thats just my guess was the epoxy and tar. thats what it feels like to me.
And I don't mean to be an *** by saying what I said...it's just that this subject is beaten to death over on caraudio.com people always knock mark potts for using particle board. all he has to say is put up the numbers i do, then talk. he is hitting 154+db with a single orion 2500d and 2 15's...he was hitting 51's all day with 1 15 and 52+ with 2 12's. I don't know anyone who can hit that with Type R's...they are not the greatest sub. I don't know many that hit that with a 15" MT....seriously.
So in the end, it's not weather mdf is better or worse than particle board, thats your opinion. I really could care less which is better, as long as my box performs, thats all I care about. I've not had a problem with the boxes i've got from him (i've had 2 now) and I will continue to buy from him as long as he still makes boxes that perform like they do.
Check out caraudio.com...they beat the mdf/pboard to death. they argue for like 20 pages and everything...it's pretty bad. ask bamaboy...he'll tell ya all about the tcab/type r boner around there

Well... when you talk about MDF vs. Particle board for a vented/ported box... it really means nothing since the box isn't sealed up.
In theory, MDF is supposed to work better for sealed applications becuase of the distance between particles is much smaller, thus making it more difficult for air to escape.
That's why us sealed guys to the extra length to make sure the enclosure is completely sealed inside and out. I do alot to keep my boxes sealed. I've been working on and off on my sub in my room, I've still got a couple thing to do, but when I built it I did a little bracing (helps keep panel flex to a minimum-- sealing better), I put block in the corners (to keep the corners from busting open... yeah that happens), I sealed every single vertice (the place where 2 panels/blocks/braces meet) with liquid nail and then I used an entire can of Duplicolor Sound Dampening/Underbody spray on the inside and another on the outside. I have one thing left to do... But some foam door sealer tape around the mounting ring... $5.00 I forget to spend everytime I go to work or Wal-mart. Oh yeah... and the plastic ring that goes on top of the mounting ring seperated from the mounting ring and buzzes every now and then... I gotta glue it back down or something...
Maybe I'll just wait on my new pair of subs... Clif Designs 12" subs... 2 in one box in my room... 500W amp... oh yeah...

Wow you have a huge e-boner for TCAB and Mark eh?? lol just messin with ya. Have you had your setup metered? Or do you just guess at what your DB ratting is?
Why wouldn't a box made out of MDF hit the same numbers you are hitting? Mark him self said that he did testes, and it was only a .1/.2 difference. And since when did "hitting Madd-DEbeez" mean anything about how good a sub is? I'm sure plenty of people are hitting that with one 12" MT or any other sub for that matter. Mark just wants everyone to know how big his E-***** is every were. Hence why he isn't liked very much. Oh, and you could have found numerous of people that could have built a box like that for half the price...He charges a lot for his boxes!!!

I haven't got metered, no. But, I've heard my fair share of "systems" and it is definetly up there.
"hitting Madd-Debeez" means nothing to me. I just like loud sound quality, and thats what I've found! But you can't measure sound quality can you?
I don't know of many "average" people (like regular wanna be gangsters with caprices and imp's) that even have the knowlede to hit a 40.
Mark, maybe he does want everyone to know how big his e-***** is. But he builds a damn good box, and his results are proven. And the funny thing is, I don't understand why people knock him...he proves all his results. It's not like he says, hey guys i hit 165 the other day' and has no pictures/video to prove.
He would be like, 'here, look at this' with a video of him getting metered around the street hitting 51's with 1 15" 'arrrr' all day.
I know I could have found people to build me boxes. I build my own though. I couldn't pull out what I could with this setup with a home made box. Maybe I shoulda went through someone that is a professional, but I'm no novice, and I built my old box perfectly, and the SQ and SPL were noticably less than the box I have now.
Maybe one day I'll migrate, I'll pick up some RE's or Adires...something like that But for now, my setup does the job. I don't compete, and I just like loud music that sounds good.

You can, but....what sounds good to me, my sound like **** to you...so SQ events are overall install, imaging, safety, and it's really the jugdes score...so like I said he may think it sounds crappy but to the person who set it up, it sounds perfect to him...
