I was going to make a downfiring box but decided not to, i recently took out my 2 back seats and made the boxes so the subs face the back, i will run and take a picture real quick, but its a hell of alot louder since it bounces off the back of the cab....

Well, first we need to know what make/model subs they are, that would help alot. As well as what kind of performance he's looking for. Does he listen to Rap/pop or Rock/country most of the time.

OK.....Took some pics real quick....when you take the seats out, there are 3 flat surface bolts....i cut some 3/4 inch plywood, drilled out the holes, and bolted the wood down....then put the boxes on the wood and screwed them down....

The 12" boxes are from walmart called "build a box" and they are very nice, go together in like 5 min max....and are carpeted but if you want something custom you can make one....they leave just enough room for your spare tire jack and stuff to stay in the middle....

You have your space under the boxes to put whatever under it In my case, my amp, and soon to be for the other side a small container for a tow strap and some tools....

Go sealed. Very forgiving design (ported are hard first time boxes, too many thing to screw up). Better power handling vs ported. Smaller airspace requirements. However some subs are better in vented and vice versa. Have any model numbers?

Downfiring is good. Helps simplify design and usually eliminates need for a grill. Stil gotta watch higher wattage systems as they need to be bolted down and secured well or they can vibrate easier. Definitely keep the airspace different, and put a near 45 degree wall to help bounce the sound waves around (instead of right back to the cone).

Really the best place to start is some simple measurements, then start sketching.

so theorectically if i have a square or rectangular box if i put a 45 degree "diffuser" (basically a piece of wood inside the sealed area at an angle other than 90 Degrees or 0 degrees from the cone) inside the box will that help my sound just wondering

Here's the basic idea behind the box I have. Best part is you still retain room in the rear.
It's the bottom left design measurements were 1st mockups, you can adjust them to fit your space and volume needs. Very functional, allows you to recline fully (depending on final design)

Box needs to be covered, but look, doesn't cover up rear speakers, and anybody who can see in your truck won't know you got a sysytem.

So Dave, I wouldn't just put in a diffuser in the middle of your box, just work it into your exterior wall design. Simplier the better, but make the sound bounce around the box instead of right back to the source (and possible noise cancellations).

Sealed = Tighter bass, not as loud. Perfect for Rock. Better power handling, smaller volume requirements.
Ported = Trickier design. Louder. Larger volume boxes. Great for Rap/R&B.

Here's my box, 2 x MBQuart 12's ran from a SoundStream 800rms amp (true power, not cheap shi*), sealed, not ridiculous loud, bet nobody else's subs can hit 18htz like mine. Awesome sound quality, loud enough to move the back window an inch at the bottom.
Someone said ported is better for rap...it all depends. If you want to hit low frequencies, don't count on it with ported. If you want to get every frequency for every type of music go with a good sealed box.

My box fits real well in my cab, doesn't cover the rear speakers at all. My seats can sit the whole way back, I ride with them the whole way back, i'm 6'2". There's space under my box too, I have my recovery gear and jack and electrical fix-up items under there.
The box/amp rack is all 1 piece, and bolted to the floor.

If he wants to do 2 10's downfiring, I have a sealed box that he can have. You lose the jump seats and the jack but it still sounds nice.

well, mine isn't just a "regular box" though. It's got an 8" port. You can buy the port and I can give you the specs to my box and it will be pretty close...(not to sound like an ***....but mine is made from particle board that is coated in epoxy (i'm pretty sure) and it's sealed with tar/silicon all around) It's a TCAB box. It's not made out of regular MDF, theres a LOT of work involved. The box costs about 300 dollars, and I'd pay 600 for the sound it puts out. I had a box for the same subs and same exact amp and it did nothing compared to this. I tried SO hard to get the same sound, I just can't do it.

If i were you, I would use slot ports. Buy a few of them...I will give you the PN for a website (they are 4" aero ports) and build yourself a box. I can get you some good specs to it. It seems like the kickers love the aero ports as much as the type r's do. I've done some experimenting.

Just come to the south florida meet...it's not that far

Really though, if you want to do some experimenting, I'll try and get some blueprints to a few boxes for ya, I know people that compete, and they can build some dang good boxes. I'll PM em if youd like! IIRC, they charge 5 dollars for box plans.

Or you can contact Mark Potts and get an 8" port and build my box (except with MDF) and see the outcome. He sells em for like 50 dollars
