V6/V8 Tach Ground Wire
#26
I got a question..I swapped a 97 Mountaineer/Expo 5.0 cluster into my 96 4cylinder body that I swapped a v8 into. I repinned the blk/yellow wire like I have read but the tach floats and does not read correctly...I then read that I should ground the blk/yellow wire to the body and it will correct the issue.....which didnt work. Anyone know what I should do?

Has any one figured out how to re-pin the 95 Setup to accept the V8 tach signal? I have the EVTM In front of me with the same pictures for the connectors, i can Clearly see pin 1 and 2 is the Bk/Y Ground as stated in later models, and the Tach input is slot 2. Do i need to find the right spot to place the Bk/Y Ground, the only available options, with out disrupting any other circuits are pin 3 and 13 on C214 and pin 2 and 4 on C215, C 216 is full. Has any one figured out a way to do so with out affecting other ****tions of the stock cluster?
I'm currently in the phase of planning out to keep all stock dash functions in my ranger once the V8 is in, And i will be utilizing the Painless wiring harness. It has an output for a tach. And I've been able to locate the plug for tach inpuit with in the evtm's and manuals i have. Just need to figure out if i can make the 95 tach compatible. I plan to try and utilize the stock CEL light with the painless harness as well. Trying to plan out what i can think of ahead, for wiring issues, that way i'm prepared going into it. Wiring is not my expertise by any means.
Thanks in advance!

95 is a bastard year for the instrument cluster. It is completely different from 94 and earlier and quite a bit different from 96-on. Going by the schematics in the EVTM, it does not appear to use the "selector" ground system for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder like the 96~2003 cluster. I'm not sure if it could even be made to read V8 frequency since no V8 was available in a RBV in 95 model year. On the other hand, there must be something that allows it to accommodate the 4 and V6 that were available in 95 and the EVTM doesn't seem to answer that question either.
I remember reading somewhere that some factory Ranger tachs have a switch on them for cylinder count but I've never seen one myself.
Faced with the same problem, I think I might swap in a 96+ cluster. However, that has its challenges because, despite the similar outward appearance, there is other stuff that is different between the 95 and 96 clusters. If you have the 95 and 96 EVTMs and don't mind repinning, it should be possible though.

Hmm, thanks for the reply, looks like i may have to take mine out and look at it, I'm also wondering if i move the Bk/Y Ground to an open slot if that will change the frequencies. Looks like i may have to pull my cluster and see if there is any other options, other then that, i will have to figure a few other things out. i have a ways to go. I'll make this my little project for now, and go from there.
Thanks for the info I appreciate it!

Well i went to the wreckers today and pulled A 95 cluster, and looked it over, and did not see any switches, I took the back Wire pad thingamagig, for lack of proper terms and tried to follow all the wired circuits in it, and couldn't figure out anything useful with my little electrical knowledge. That being said i got a picture of the back of the pin's for the Tach, It was pulled from a 95 4.0. My truck is a 3.0 currently.

I was just posting this picture mainly for reference, as i saw you posted about the possiblilty of switches, wich are non existent in the 95 cluster assembly. Does any one have a 96 and or 97 EVTM where they could scan and post the photos of the same connestions with the 3 wire pin out diagrams for the cluster, the 98 is posted, but im worried it may be different slightly, Would like to try and make the re pin puzzle work if necessary, i can get my hand on a 97 cluster at the wreckers, so if i can figure out if i can make it work ahead of time, i would appreciate it.

Good afternoon! New to the forum, does anyone have the dash cluster wiring diagram? I believe someone got into the plugs on the cluster and started swapped things around after they transplanted an Explorer 5.0 into my newly aquired Ranger. The tach isn't reading right and I noticed recently that the speedo and odometer quit working, I believe they quit driving it because the transmission wasn't shifting and when pulled into reverse or a forward gear, it is a violent shift. To me, seems like everything is pointing to an electrical issue and not knowing exactly what they did or swapped in, (other than knowing they did in fact swap in the explorer computer as the VIN for the explorer comes up on my scan tool) not sure as to what they monkeyed with before giving up. So I'd like to start at the cluster with making sure it's pinned correctly and go from there. Thanks in advance for any help!
