Sound's like you'll have to take the engine back out so you can take it with you to the hardware store and test-fit bolts... That sucks.

Good Deal!!!! I figured that was the issue from my own experiences. Have fun with her...and be careful when it rains! My truck is all over the road when I get on it.

Don’t know the size of the bolts but if you have a Tap Set just check it out one tap at a time or Tap a new size that fits the way you want or can get.

Well im not outta the woods yet. Still have crazy idle issue except now it doesnt stall. its like the MAF solved some of the problem. I was getting good gas mileage for a few days now i think im back to bad again. CEL is on again but it could just be cuz of the speed sensor. im getting the codes pulled today.
surges at idle and lopes from 600-1000 rpms. also does not start and stay running at all without feathering the gas pedal. this is getting rediculous. I have read that it can be an issue with the idle set screw, o2 sensors or IAC motor. it was running the otehr day and i unplugged the IAC and it just shut off. No vac leaks cuz that was checked before.

Wirelessly posted

I forgot to mention that when I was having all my issues I went ahead and bought a new IAC also...........not sure if it made a difference or if it was just the MAF....I did them both at the same time.

alright damnit!!! same issue

p1152
p1132

im guessing my 3.0 o2's are not compatible.. and im not sure if my MAF that i bought for 121 bucks was even messed up. at least i can return it.

as far as mal washing it. Shocking enough we are back in typical south FL summer. which for those who dont know means random thunderstorms usually mid afternoon every day and pretty much whenever you wonna do anything. there for i havent had the opporitunity to wash it much less drag Mal lol

Well i looked it up and I believe that is 100% the source of my problem. The part numbers for the 5.0 and 3.0 O2's are different.

Yea me and Mal are still doin insanity. Cardio Power & resistance tonight. FML

I doubt that the O2's are the problem. They're just reporting it.

Ive done searching all day and looked up part numbers. different part for each vehicle so that means different sensor, prolly reads diff ohms. Lots of forums covered same idle stall issue that I had and bad o2 sensors were to blame.

The Ranger and Explorer sensors both switch at the same 0.45V. Over the years, some of the sensor heaters have been different to make them light off faster on newer vehicles for the stricter emissions requirements but I think even the heaters were the same for a 99 5.0 and a 2002 3.0. Regardless, the heater turns off shortly after start and doesn't affect fuel control at all after that. The reason for the part number difference is probably something as simple as the wire length.

I'm using 2003 4.0 sensors with my 99 5.0 engine and I've never had any O2 codes.

Damn. well its really one of my only options as of now. they are the upstream ones. i dont have downstream ones. and mine are off a 2001.. I looked up and the 2003-up ranger use the same O2 but the 2001 is different.

Yes, the sensors could be bad but other things are more likely.

What is the fuel pressure at the rail?
Does the fuel damper diaphragm hold vacuum?
Are you running a factory 5.0 70mm MAF from a 99~01 Explorer?

Ford Racing recommends against running any of its alphabet cams in the Explorer.

Well the fuel curves and everything and the A/F mixture is perfect (saw for myself on dyno run sheet). ECM has been changed for the Cam. Fuel pressure at the rail is perfect to 63lbs if im not mistaken.

I do however believe you Bob, in that it seems that it is something besides the o2's. seems everywhere i read it is VERY uncommon to have both o2's set off a code and them acutally be the problem.. I am suspecting a vacuum leak somewhere. Ill have to investigate this afternoon. I did notice the otehr day a crack in the upper intake where the front bolt holds it down. Ill have to check that out and of course check everything else out..

Another question. sounds like my rockers arms are LOUD, however i know they are not loose.

BIG CLUE!!! cant believe i forgot. WORST stall issue and idle issue is when it is put into reverse!!!

Be sure to check that the Pulse Damper holds vacuum - if it doesn't, the engine will suck a ton of fuel from the rail right into the intake manifold.

Another quick check: try unplugging the MAF connector. That will put the system into FMEM (Failure Mode Effects Management) and the PCM will use alternate inputs to infer the MAF input, in this case using the TPS and RPM. If this change shows an improvement, then the problem is with the MAF input to the PCM.

Try the same thing with the oxygen sensors unplugged instead of the MAF.

Mine cracked in exactly the same place and I suspect that it has to do with using the original factory torque specs with the phenolic spacer between the upper and lower castings. Maybe we need to use a lower torque on the two short end bolts than on the other four. Regardless, a vacuum leak there would likely affect one cylinder much more than the other seven and that would only affect one of the O2 sensors.

Take a look at the O2 sensors where the four wires come out. Check for oil or other contamination that might block airflow down the wires to the reference cell. In the unlikely scenario that both of the sensors are blocked, you might get those codes. Sometimes they can get blocked from mud while off roading.

Roller rockers and aluminum covers might be a loud combination. If you're sure about the adjustment and it sounds like all of them are noisy, not just one or two, then it might just be characteristic for that setup.
