Dropped Head off FINALLY!!!!! should see Engine fully rebuilt in next 2 weeks!!
Stopped at an exhaust shop too. guy was a dick wouldnt even give me a number to do it. but says " yea we do em all the time" so Im like we then give me a number, ya know. oh well. Tips on installing rockers. I know how to do it no prob. what about shims if needed? best place to get them? Ordered new radiator too!! |
Go on cranes main website and look up their rocker arm installation instructions. Its very important to do it right and it will tell you exactly how to shim them properly. Make sure you follows those instructions, alot of mustang guys have problems from not installing properly. I just finished doing this last week on my engine. As for the shims I bought ford ones off of summit and they were like 8 bucks.
|
ive read it and watched videos online. its really basic. comes down to no more than half turn from zero lash to reach correct foot lb.
Just wasnt sure if you can go to local auto parts store and get a shim kit |
My instructions show 1/4 to 1 full turn til it torques, and it has to be on the correct base of the cam lobe as well.
|
|
WTF!!!! Summit is out of the ford racing shim kit and the crane kit till the end of MAY!!
But wait! Jegs has kits available now.. sweet. Just ordered. |
Just got the call, Head is finished!! picking it up today. Radiator and Rocker Shim kit will be here Monday! Will install head this weekend.
JY run tmw. still need some of the trans cooler hard lines. also the ebrake cable from the Explorer, I have the short one now I need the long one. running down the list i also need a very short (or modified) bolt to plug the egr bung on the header. and 2 longer bolts for the upper intake due to the spacer im running. So i think i might do than along with the JY. |

For the long intake manifold bolts, I used a couple of extra 6 1/2" bolts I had from a spare intake elbow. My spacer is only about 1/2" thick though. If you're running the more common 1" spacer, those won't work. The bolt thread is 5/16-18 and length should be around 7" using a 1" heat spacer with the Explorer upper. Unless you're very lucky, you won't find these long, slender bolts on the shelf at the local hardware store. You might have to order from a specialty bolt store such as Fastenal or equivalent. |
Yea luckily we have A LOT of bolt and tool stores around here. i have the ones that came with the spacer but the guy only sends 2 and says go get 2 more... retarded.
Got the DS Head mounted and torqued down. |

I tried installing my Trick Flow intake this week with a 1" spacer and it didnt work. The Wiper motor was in the way..I don't know if your setup is the same as my 1996...but I wanted to share that info with you. I ended up ditching the spacer and the intake cleared fine. If you are unable to find the bolts you need locally you might can use the TFS-516X725SHCS2 Trick Flow 7 1/4" bolts they are $20.69 for the pair if you are able to use your spacer.
|
^ ive heard of people running into clearance issues. but luckiy Im body lifted so i have nooo issues! thanks for the heads up tho.
Bob, Im gonna get some pics of the bolts side be side today and uplad them. the ones they sent are a bit longer than stock. |

JY was half success. pulled ebrake cable but while doing it def stick a flat head screwdriver into the meaty part of my palm right under my index finger... got some meat hangin out and blood all over mysself in the JY lol luckily i bring paper towels!
Bob, here are those bolts. SS are kit ones gold are stock Attachment 114434 Also, i can find ANY trans cooler lines that arent cut or bent to hell. can i just get fittings and run SS braided or hose instead of hardlines.?? |
Be careful with stainless Mark.... They're really brittle... They won't stretch as much as a grade 8 will. So as you tighten them, if you go too far they'll snap off and you'll be screwed. It depends on the application, but it's something to remember.

thanks tre.
Bob. member we were talkin bout that Oil pressure sensor.. im thinkin the 98 one is diff take a look Attachment 114429 here is the replacement from summit Attachment 114430 I finally got a 100$ refund from another company for Mal's Header so im gettin all the small stuff ordered. spark plugs, etc Replacing thermostat while im at it. My bro said 160*... what yall think? |
The factory OP "sensor" is just an on/off switch like a Ranger's. I doubt that it is different 98 to 99 but I don't have any evidence to back that up. Whatever you get should be a direct plug in to the factory engine harness connector. Why not just buy one from Ford for a 99 Ex 5.0?
I would use 180 or 192 t-stat. |
I would use the 180 thermostat. As for the spacer bolts, I just put a 1" on my explorer intake yesterday and I needed 4 long, and 2 short bolts so I had to go buy some more, just as a heads up.
|
Do you remember the sizes?
