rebuild 4.0L
Hey all, I'm curious if anyone has had their 4L V6 rebuilt and how much it cost. For a year 2000 ranger.
I know there's a lot of variables in cost when it comes to a rebuild, I'm just looking for a ball park idea. I've got several light leaks all around my engine i would like to have it rebuilt before they actually become a real problem. Thanks

It depends where and what is leaking. If the work being done would require the timing to be touched in any way, for example replacing a head gasket, and you plan to keep the truck a few more years, then have the top end rebuilt. I would guess its in the $4-5k range if a shop does it. The timing chain tensioners and guides on your truck, if original, could definitely use a replacement. Otherwise just sell it or live with the leaks. If its not leaking oil to the point where you need to add oil between changes then its not an issue worth paying to fix. Just my opinion. That being said, I rebuilt the top end on mine as preventative maintenance at 175k miles.

The 4.0l OHV is a much simpler engine than the 4.0l SOHC
Valve cover gaskets should run about $200-$300 Can$
Oil pan gasket can run as high as $500-$600 because transmission may need to be removed and engine lifted
Rear main seal leak PUMPS OUT oil when engine is running, big big oil leak, transmission needs to be pulled back or out, so $300-$500
Same with front main seal but easier to access, $200
This is labor only, parts extra, like gaskets and oil/filter
Shops will only use manufacturer parts, i.e. from a local Ford dealer, that's because they have to guaranty their work, as you would expect when you pay for the work
So parts cost will be higher than you see on-line
Leaks toward the front of engine bay are often power steering fluid, looks like oil spots because it is oil, just a different kind of oil
If automatic trans it can be a trans cooler leak(near radiator), ATF is also an oil
Get some card board and put it under the vehicle so you can pin point where it leaks from
