passenger side engine upper oil leak
I am an old guy (82) but in good physical condition and have a pristine 2002 4.0 Ranger XLT about to turn 200,000 miles. I.do all the mechanical stuff I can get to without a lot of trouble. At 100,000 the timing chain guides broke so I had to have the engine pulled and the timing chains replaced.
Last week I saw oil on the floor and since I changed oil and filter about 200 miles ago, I jacked it up to make sure the drain plug and filter were not leaking. Both were tight and clean. I did see where oil had run down the passenger side of the engine and was evident on the oil and transmission pans. My first thought was passenger side valve cover and maybe a stuck PCV valve.
Took it to the local Ford dealer repair facility and told them to replace the RS valve cover gasket and the PCV valve.
The ford shop says my oil and transmission pans are leaking and they want to put new pans and gasketson???? Told me it was going to cost $1640.and I only paid $1500 to have the engine pulled by independent shop and timing chains replaced.
I told the Ford shop to replace the valve cover gasket and the PCV valve only-- does that sound like a good plan?

Only doing the work you want is a good plan. After you repeated what you wanted (VC gasket and PCV only), did they give you a price?
Why couldn't you go back to the shop you know?
Even with the small bit of info you gave, the "local Ford dealer repair facility" sounds dishonest.
