O/d light blinks

O/d light blinks
After about 10 minutes of driving my o/d light will start blinking. Its not solid tho its a continuous blink an then it shifts hard into 2nd gear. The rpms dont actually wise though as if o/d is actually off. If I click the o/d button nothing happens. I've been stumped on it for a while an no shop will help atleast tell me what's wrong they just automatically want to rebuild the trans. 2002 4x2 v6 automatic.

O/D Off light is to the transmission what the Check Engine Light is to the engine. When the O/D Off light starts flashing, the truck automatically goes into limp home mode, hence the rough 2nd gear shift. Basically the transmission is commanding full fluid pressure to force the shift so you can "limp" home, or to the repair shop. This also means that the transmission is leaving codes, however transmission codes are only accessible via the pricy scanners. In other words, the local parts stores can't read them for you. Only a dedicated repair shop with a high dollar scanner can access them.,
Unfortunately, driving the truck with a flashing O/D Off light is rarely good, if there has been a failure of the clutches or any other wear part inside of the transmission, there could be debris floating around the transmission. Debris in the transmission is an easy way to destroy it, in short order. It's also one of the reasons why the shops want to do a total rebuild, it's so they can clean out any debris in the transmission.
Here's what my gasket looked like after trying to drive my truck with an intermittent O/D Off light, and after it completely failed:
Unfortunately I never did find the problem as I opted to just swap the truck to a manual transmission instead.
