i think the cold is whats causing it, your engine is running colder and thats probably whats causing it...

Does it feel kind of reluctant to accelerate? Its kind of hard to tell on a new vehicle like that. I thought my ranger got bad milage when I first bought it, when it actually just had a smaller tank than what i was used to. What I do is use the cruise control right after it switches gears to get the rpms as low as possible. 10mpg sucks though. Im gettin 17 city 20 hwy with only a kn stock replacement filter on my 4wd 4.0(37k)

Ok here's more info to chew on....I NEVER haul heavy loads, yes I am a gas and brake guy around town..... I don't drive it slow and easy, not my style...I think my 10.5 comment was a little low, took some more readings and maybe I am up to gas mileage average around town of 12 .5 on a VERY good day with the wind blowing behind me....ok so let's assume there is something fundamentally wrong with this truck...any suggestions....it doesn't hesitate and sounds strong....but I am not happy watching the gas gauge level drop so quickly!

I think your first order of business is to measure your gas mileage for a couple tanks a little more precisely. A lot of folks just guestimate it. I know when I pull up to the pumps it feels like I'm getting 2 MPG.. or more accurately, it feels like my wallet is being emptied at a disproportiate rate.
Next time you go for a fill-up ride it down to less than 1/8th of a tank. Then fill up until the pump turns off and reset your tripometer. Run that tank down to ~1/8 or less and refil until the pump turns off again. The miles on your trip divided by how many gallons you pump is your MPG.
Or better yet, keep a fuel log!
Our pickups get such low mileage that rounding either the miles driven OR the gallons pump can make for some pretty large error in MPG figures.
