I hate catalytic converters!

I have already installed a super 40 series flowmaster on my truck, but its not quite loud enough. I looked at cutting a couple of the FOUR catalytic converters off, but it looks like ford has intentionally designed the exhaust so you can't. Does anyone know a way that I can at least take one of them off? Thanks. Eric.

First of all, not only does removing a cat void your warranty, but performance-wise there's almost no benefit, as almost all newer vehicles come with high-flow cats. sure, your exhaust will get louder, but this kind of louder doesnt really include "better" sounding. then again... i could be wrong.

maybe you should reconsider your exhaust system from the cat-back. how does it route, as far as single or dual out? have you considered any other mufflers besides flowmaster?

So, you guys are willing to pollute the air more, just so your truck can have better sound.

No other way to say it: you're jerks. 'Nuff said.

Hope your state goes to mandatory emission inspections and you get fined. You deserve it.

When my Powerball numbers hit, and I can afford to build a race-ready Ranger with a V-8, it WILL have cats under it.

John is right, do the right thing. Be responsible.

If you have a trailered offroad or race vehicle, not street driven, I have no problem eliminating the CATS. It's just not going to be run enough to make any difference and, in fact, the laws allow for this in most cases.

An over-the-road vehicle is a different situation.

do older trucks have better performance without cats? (my friend here seems to think so)

I have to agree with John on this issue. You're an idiot for even considering removing ANY of the CATS on your exhaust.

You will not get any benefits from removing your CATS, not on this engine. Like most newer engines, the 4.0 requires backpressure to properly complete the ignition process.

If you want a louder exhaust, get a V8, otherwise deal with what you have, without causing any more pollution than you already do.

Older trucks, when the CAT's were removed, yes. Why? Because the old designs were quite restrictive.

Modern trucks seldom benefit much at all. The reason being because the CAT's are more efficient both in terms of reaction efficiency, and flow efficiency. The gains might not be measurable.

But what is "performance"? Is it being able to get 2 more HP at the expense of the pollution? Nothing exists in a vaccum, including performance -- everything is part of a "whole" and that whole includes other factors.

Taking the CAT's off and not caring tells you something about the character of these guys. And what it says ain't good...

the only reason you would need to cut the cats off is if it killed your engine which it doesnt! there are better ways of getting performance out of your truck. k&n, turbo, chips

Thanks for the replies guys. I have decided that I'm not going to cut off my cats. One, I agree you do need a certain amount of back pressure and two, I'm just too lazy to fab up a piece like ranger interceptor did. BTW I already have a K&N.

Maybe you're not a jerk after all. Hard to tell since you never addressed our comments to you on the emissions front. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Actually I have researched with live data from an inspection machine, and the HC's and CO's werent much higher with the last two cats removed and it doesnt throw a CEL for catalyst effeciency below threshold either!!!!!!! Hey and again im not mad, just defending my voice!!!

I guarantee you guys havent spent as much time on the dyno with your trucks as I have... Not saying I am special or that I am better than you, but I HAVE seen improvements eleminating the rear two cats.......... In 1998, Ford installed 6 yes I said SIX catalytic converters on the mustang gt's. Tell me how that exhaust system(whether they are high flow cats or not) isnt gonna restrict flow and you arent gonna benefit from losing a few... I have seen as much as 8hp gain from removing the rear two on a 4.0l sohc ranger. This may require a slight adjustment in the fuel and spark curves, but it is proven on the dyno. Call me a Jerk if you guys want to, but Im no worse than a cow farting!!!

So, you're justified in removing them then? You still haven't addressed the selfishness and stupidity of modifying the emission control system that is there for a very excellent reason.

Are you or are you not that kind of jerk? Any arguments you make for "performance" don't hold.

So, okay, I guess you are a total @sshole. Know why? The cow does not have a choice. You do, and you choose to make our air worse.

It's amazing how selfish @ssholes like you can justify yourselves. Now it's cow farts? I guess perhaps after all, there is a relation betwen cow farts and you...and I'll leave it to you to figure out the similarity.

Thanx!!! Maybe I should care more, but since we have all of these fine illegal citizens driving the biggest polluting pieces of junk, people eliminating all of their cats, and gas companies gouging us, I DONT. Why should we care, if our leaders dont??? When I say that I mean: Let em all in, we can use the help spending all of our money and selling all of our stocks and bonds to people who are gonna take it and run back to their country to buy chemical warfare and prostitutes... Then use the warfare on US?????? WTF???? Thats what we should be concerned about, not the frickin cats... Maybe I am an A$$HOLE... So be it!

Why don't you just run the exhaust system through the cab of the truck. replace the center arm rest with the muffler. You live in Michigan the heat will be nice. and it will be plenty loud.

Or you can make an audio recording of the exhaust and then make an hour long loop of the recording. then just play it in your cd play and blast the radio.

Very good, Nick! Now we know who you are. A foolish man with absolutely no conviction, no belief, and no concern for ANYONE but yourself.

You are saying that YOUR ethics are based on whether someone you don't even know does something. Somehow I thought you were an adult, but I see instead you are a child, blaming everything on your "parents" -- only you see your "parents" as EVERYONE else.

If ANYONE ever does anything with you that requires follow through from you, they should beware. You don't care about ANYTHING as long as other people in the world do wrong -- which of course SOMEONE will always be doing. How convenient, Nick.

You are the worst of what humanity has to offer: a young boy without a conscience, in the body of an adult. From people like you any atrocity is possible, as long as it suits you. I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

No woman is safe with you, no man should trust you. Do not become a parent -- children deserve better.
