On the hunt for a 4.0 SOHC with no timing chain rattle.

I sorta butchered it up by attempting to reuse the '06 auto harness and confused my stock '01 manual PCM like we did on my buddy's '01 auto to manual swap. But that didn't work at all so I had to sorta chop both '01 and '06 harnesses and make one good one.
Something to remember.... depending on the year, some pigtails/sensors changed. Things like the fuel injectors, dpfe, cam position sensors, etc. Basically what Im trying to say is to be careful. The harness you get may not match the engine you get. My engine came with the harness. See if the yard'll include a harness.

Hey Shane,
Thanks for responding to my thread. I can see where someone could get in a lot of trouble by using a wiring harness that didn't come with the engine. So, I'm definitely going to get a doner truck or use the wiring harness that came with the engine (What's a DPFE).
I also noticed that on the 2008 Rangers with the 4.0 SOHC there's three connections going into the firewall and not the one big connection with a 10 mm bolt in the center.

That's because '07+ trucks have a different PCM design(3 seperate plugs compared to '06 and older one big one with a socket in the middle. I can't go too deep into it as I honestly havn't a clue as to the PCM internal differences between '07 and '06 stuff(programming wise and if an '08 pcm would work on an '04). And honestly, I really forgot about that change when I ordered my engine. I really only used some pigtails from the '06 auto harness on my '01 manual....most the harness is stock '01 with '06 engine changes(pigtails, sensor clips, etc). But the '06 harness is in pieces...probably in the same spot it was a year ago. lol.
DPFE...I'm having a massive brain fart right about meow. lol.

Hey Shane,
Thanks for clearing that up for me. When I first seen the three separate plugs going into the firewall, I thought some idiot left the plastic cover off. I really think the engineers at Ford have way too much time on their hands and they certainly don't believe in the old adage "If it aint broke don't fix it"

The 104-pin PCM replaced the earlier 60-pin in the 1995 Ranger when the added requirements of OBDII made it a necessity. In 2007, the more capable 170 pin PowerPC PCM replaced the 104 pin. These changes were driven by government requirements and changes in technology, not by boredom.
