help with engine swap out of 97 explorer vin x
Hello everyone, Im stumped I have a 94 ranger with 4.0l 0hv vin x that I swapped in a motor from a 97 explorer 4.0l ohv vin x, everything went in ok for the most part, starts but runs rough(most likely due to vacuum or the disconnected cam sensor) my question is I cant seem to find a connector on my original wire harness for the camshaft sensor/ synchronizer, the original motor and the new motor both has the cam sensor but no plug for it anywhere?does it have to be plugged in or can it be unplugged and will the oil pump shaft still work? if it has to be connected does anyone have any info on the 3 pin wire harness pinout or what wires to tap into. thanks in advance for any advise on it.

1994 Ranger 4.0l OHV didn't have a Cam sensor or EGR Valve unless it was first sold in California, 1995 and up have both
The Cam synchro has the oil pump drive so fine to use, the 1990-1994 just had the drive that sat flush with block, just less moving parts is only benefit
As for the rough running
Check coil pack firing order
3 4
2 6
1 5
front
The 5 6 4 side always gets mixed up, follow EACH wire to its cylinder, do it THREE TIMES, lol

thank you for the help Ron D. So the 94 4.0l ohv didn't use a cam sensor? correct? im stumped because both engines I have the cam sensors are on the top of the oil pump drive, the one that was in the 94 original and also the new one out of the 97 explorer,
both are vin code x,
please correct me if im wrong,so the plug to the cam sensor/synchronizer does not have to be hooked up and the oil pump drive will still function?
thanks again for any info on this.

It was probably a Calif Ranger then
The oil pump drive is mechanical, so no the crank sensor doesn't need to be plugged in but the 1994 computer will want a cam sensor pulse if its a Calif Ranger
If it has the cam sensor plug then you will need to find it, feel the area at top of bell housing where it meets the block, wires can get pinched in between when engine is installed
In a 1994/5 Cam sensor plug will have 3 wires, a red, a black/white stripe, and a dark blue/orange stripe wire

thank you for responding quickly , do you know the pin out of the 3 wire harness. the original plug is no where to be found does this look correct shown in the pic
also do you know what pin numbers on the pcm main plug the wires connect or can be spliced into?again thank you for your help.
does this look correct for what the wires are?

Yes, that order on the sensor looks correct, but don't have a diagram for it, not sure on the 12v and ground sides but signal is the center wire
The 12v wire is Key ON 12v from EEC Relay, it was a Red wire, same Red Wire can be found on MAF sensor heater, IAC Valve and each fuel injector
The Ground is just engine/system ground, so any good ground point can be used
Neither of these are connected to computer
The Signal wire is connected to computer, it was a Dark Blue/orange stripe wire that runs to pin 24 on the 60-pin EEC(computer)
Pin numbers seen here: Ford EEC-IV
Again this is the 60-pin EEC-IV computer, in 1995 Rangers got 104-pin EEC-V computers
