Did the 37,555 plus Thread search first
Did the search first, learned a world of info, ,THANX. but not what I was looking for. How does one tell the difference between a OHC & a SOHC while still in the truck. My 89 Ranger has a very tired 2.9. 5 speed. I found a one owner 94 exploder with a 4.0 with a complete service record from day one, for 300.00 with a blown auto trany. I would like to put the 4.0 into my ranger. I know the OHC will fit with little trouble. So how do you know what difference?

SOHC is a 4.0 engine found in the bay of 2000+ rangers.
OHV is a 4.0 engine found in 1990-2000 Rangers.
Simply, just go by the year of the ranger. Are you trying to tell the dfiference between a 3.0 and 4.0 engine? Because the 3.0 is also OHV. And additionally, any ranger wiill say what the engine is on the door, or usually on the engine sometimes.
