Cylinder leak down test with intake manifold off?
Is it possible to perform a cylinder leak down test on each cylinder when or if I take the intake manifold off on a 1997 Ford Ranger 4.0 liter OHV? I am assuming that when I get down to taking the intake manifold off, I will have everything off that will include the valve covers, as well, thus making it easier to determine if I am at TDC for the given cylinder?

Intake or exhaust manifolds off won't matter for doing leak down test
Looking at the valves/rockers usually won't help most people either, lol
Look at post #8 in this thread: https://www.ranger-forums.com/4-0l-o...uggles-172550/
By far the easiest method to determine TDC compression stroke on any cylinder in a V6
If you want to do it by looking at the valves first determine which valve is which for the cylinder you want to test
Turn the crank clockwise manually until intake valve starts to open, piston is at TDC "intake stroke" at that time
Remember position of crank
Turn crank 180deg(1/2 turn)
Piston is now at BDC(bottom dead center), intake valve should now be fully closed
Turn crank another 180deg, this is "compression stroke"
You are now at TDC compression stroke for this cylinder
