Camshaft Synchronizer procedure

Camshaft Synchronizer procedure
Hi gang, I'm looking to replace the camshaft synchronizer on my '97 Ranger and would like to know just how many things to remove to get to it. I've had the intake manifold off before but of course would rather not have to do it if I don't have to.
Thanks all,
Jack

Welcome to the forum
You didn't mention the engine size, but assuming a V6 3.0l or 4.0l
You shouldn't "need" to remove anything but the synchronizer
But to make things easier I would pull out all 6 spark plugs so you can rotate the crank manually, also clean and regap spark plugs
And to make it easier you can pull off the cam sensor part(top) and rotate the crank to TDC 0deg mark
Then look at where the vane inside is pointed relative to the 2 screw holes for the sensor, take pictures
Or you can turn the crank so vane lines up with a screw hole, but mark crank position
Then pull out the old synchro, it will turn a bit as its lifted up because the cam gears are angled
Then line up the new synchro's vane to the old one
Then as you lower it down it should turn into correct position
If it doesn't drop down all the way then oil pump hex key is not lined up, turn crank left and right a bit but bring it back to same spot, synchro will drop into place when oil pump drive lines up
Confirm same alignment as old, tighten down and install sensor
The long way seen here, if old sensor timing was lost: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...nsor_cmp.shtml
