i had a K&N in my 2.3 and it seemed to run ok. I put a Fram Airhog in the 4.0 and did the airbox mod. Even with the Flowmaster 40 dual exhaust, you can hear it sucking in air. I don't think there's any power increase, but even if the motor is able to breathe easier, that's all I'm concerned with.

Yeah, apparantly the grommet design varies from year to year.. some I've heard you can turn with a large flathead screwdriver and they pop right out, others are a simple friction fit. I don't have any data to back up which years had which design.
Re: cutting vs. just removing the silencer.. pull the silencer out and look at the hole compared to the size of the intake tract. There is no gain from cutting the airbox, only extra noise because the remaining plastic will resonate oddly, and extra water on your filter and in your engine. Its common sense that any water will be coming from below or from the front.. thats the last thing you should remove from your airbox! In fact it would be a smart addition to the mod to put a small plastic shield below the opening on the front of the box to deflect water coming up from the road. I've run with a removed silencer and a K&N drop-in since the week I took delivery, and I have yet to connect a problem to it. Over-oiling the K&N maybe, but not the silencer removal.
