BAMA tuner long-term

The only real need for differing tunes on a stock ranger would be octane related.

Anyone have an idea on costs for a local dyno tunes?
Would the truck still need to be on a dyno machine or do you just leave it hooked up for day to day driving and send an X2 dealer the data?

Get the X-cal tuner. You'll like it. I just can't recommend Doug at Bamachips. At least not based on the way he treated me.

Go with Fred at Rogue Performance. Although he's known as the 3.0 King, he's also very good with the 4.0. He's got an Explorer that he's tuned within an inch of it's life (I rode in it), so he knows what he's doing there as well.

I think the 07's cannot be pretuned. Something changed in that year. The Tuner has to be plugged in to read the "strategy". The tunes have to be e-mailed.
I'm not 100% on this, I just know there is something unique about them. An E-mail or phone call should clear that up.
On the code, zach had it right except the digits. It's 4 digits. 3 letters followed by one number. like kpy8

hopefully you are not like me and have a "discontinued" PCM code that has to be re-written in the tune.......my PCM is out of a '96 Ranger and it was SEE1....Fred had to investigate it with SCT and come to find out that SEE2 would work in the tune.......
Wayne uses Fred for tunes....both are awsome to work with!

I am very pleased with brenspeed, or at least with the tunes I received for my '05 Stang. Have had no issues with the tune on it, but since the stang is now gone, they are sending me a tune for the Ranger to use on my existing XCal2. Highly recommend brenspeed!
I'll have to look tonight for the code. Haven't analyzed under the hood yet. Quick glance and didn't see the PCM...LOL

The Ranger changed PC's in '07 to the PowerPC which has the codes, but it is written on the back of the PC (pull it). It can be scanned through the DLC (OBDII port) to check the strategy and tune by email as well.
Data-logging is a great tool, one of my favorites.
Dyno tunes, well... I do some tuning on a dyno, then follow it up with road tests. There are nice benefits from both, but how much time do you spend driving on the dyno? Compare that to your street time. Since maybe 1/1000th of one percent of vehicle drivers have ever been within a 1/4 mile of a dyno, chances are a street tune will be be more to your likeing. Prime example, I tuned an '06 Ranger on the dyno and it drove like **** on the street. It took a good hour on the road to make it a "daily-driver".
Don't get me wrong, the dyno provides some good data, but....
Also watch the numbers game. I don't give a rats butt about peak numbers, they mean almost nothing. 25lb/ft of torque off idle? Welll, that's another story!
Every vehicle is different, there is no "one size fits all" tune (well, ther is factory...). Fuel differences are big to, 10% Ethanol content has different timing and AFR needs than straight gas. Michigan (and others) are starting to sell E20 - Guess what???
Now that the X3's and LiveWires are becoming stable, there are more and more options woth improved hardware. For the time being, the XCal2 is the workhorse. Just purchased a "better" Wide Band O2 that can be calibrated, so I can do more E85 and mixed gas tuning, that's going to be "the guano".
