2000 4x4 Ranger 4.0 OHV runs fine then will start missing bad, then eventually not re
Hey guys I have a 2000 4x4 Ranger XLT 4x4 with a 4.0 OHV and a 5 speed. Truck has 233k miles on it now I bought it last year with 215k miles on it. The truck has ALWAYS been stone reliable till last week.
Last week I drove the truck to pick up some countertops about 10 Miles away and the truck ran fine..I left the motor Idling while I went inside and came back out and the motor was idling very low and missing badly. When I got in it I pushed the gas to the floor and it acted like it was flooding itself to death...Barely running, missing terribly, finally died and wouldn't restart. It would hit occasionally when I tried to restart it but it never would restart.. After about 3 hours later the truck started just fine like nothing was wrong and I drove it home no problem..
All the while the ECM never showed ANY codes or the check engine light at all while this was going on..
Fast forward to today, was driving home today and the truck was doing fine then I noticed on the interstate it barely had any power getting on the interstate..Finally got it up to the speed limit and the truck lost all power and barely stayed running till I came to a stop on the side of the road.Motor was barely running and maybe firing on 1 cylinder..
Any ideas what could be causin this motor to do this? It reminds me of an old school foxbody V8 Mustang that the TFI module was going out on..Motor would die while driving it but let it cool down and it would restart back up and drive normally till it got hot again.
Any ideas what could cause this?

Reads like fuel pump is failing
You could try changing the fuel filter first because it needs to be done every 5 years and when you put in a fuel pump
Rangers have no Fuel Pressure sensor, so with no Codes showing its not a "sensor issue", so must be a mechanical issue
If possible get/rent a fuel pressure gauge, there is a port on the engine to screw in this gauge
1998-2000 4.0l OHV Ranger should have 55-65psi fuel pressure
Also when you turn the Key ON, you should HEAR the fuel pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds, a HUMMMMM, its not quiet, so cycle key on and off as much as needed to determine of you hear it running
There will be a "click" from engine bay, fuel pump relay being activated, then the HUMMMM, then it will stop after 2 seconds, its a safety thing
Yes, the Rangers with TFI ignitions had the same issue with TFI modules getting hot, you don't have that system in a 2000 Ranger, last used in 1994 3.0l Rangers

The fuel pump is definitely running but not sure if it's pumping enough fuel or not. I took it out last night and the strainer filter on the bottom of the pump looked really bad. I'm replacing the pump and strainer now. The fuel filter was replaced about 10k miles ago so it should be good. I replaced the coil pack as pure maintenance on it when I replaced the fuel filter about 10k miles ago so not sure if the new one could be going out or what..
