2000 4.0 OHV oil pressure problems

Hi, I have a 2000 ranger XLT 4.0 OHV. I recently hauled a trailer on a 4 hr round trip to help a friend move but on the way back my oil pressure would dance for a minute before completely dropping but I would pull over and let the truck rest for about an hr and it would run fine for about 20 minutes before repeating. Any ideas as to what might be happening?

Welcome to the forum

Could just be the sender/switch on the engine

If oil pressure actually drops you WILL hear lifter clatter, its loud, "tick, tick, tick" but 12 of them all at once
And you didn't mention that

The sender switch is on the driver side of Block, closer to the front than back

Diagram here: http://repairguide.autozone.com/znet...3f8021b7e3.jpg

It's at the end of an extension tube, you should remove the sender AND then.................
Put a rag or tray under end of extension, we WANT oil to come out
Disconnect the 4 wire connector on Coil Pack, so NO START

Crank the engine over, count to 3
Then check to make sure oil did come out
This cleans out the extension which can get clogged up and cause your dropping oil pressure

And nothing wrong with unscrewing the extension and taking it out to clean

DO NOT use tape on the end threads on the extension OR the Sender, the sender needs a good ground to the engine to work, bare metal threads provides that ground

there was oil in this connector. Do I need to buy a new one or just clean it out and see if it fixes it?

OK, good work

Must have a sticky mud down there, that was a thick coating on the sender
