If 85 has 12v and 86 is a ground then relay should "click" when you plug it in, and that would be wrong, you are testing wrong relay, look at pages 139 and 140 in owners manual for relay layout

Relay #6 is starter relay

You can download 1999 Ranger owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

Circled relay is #6 correct? If so that’s the one I’ve been testing

Yes thats the one
It would have to click if there is 12v and a ground, you tested that, and said there is 12v and ground on 85 and 86

Test for 12v between 85 and 86, maybe you read meter wrong

I’ve been using a test light. There was only 12v on the one that gets 12v from the 50 amp fuse, has 12v all the time.

The one that goes to starter has ground, but no 12v when key is turned.

OK that's slot 30 or 87 that gets 12volt from fuse 50, not slot 85 or 86

With key ON, not in START
Is slot 86 a Ground?

If so PATS is OK

If you’re talking about the wire that goes to the starter, then yes it is a ground, and the one to the left of it. Think it’s a brown and tan wire

No, the one that goes to the starter is slot 30 or 87, not 85 or 86, and its not a ground, it may show as one because its another relay with a coil thats grounded

12v from the fuse is 30 or 87, wire that goes to starter is 30 or 87, you decide which is which but that part is not the problem

85 and 86 are the slots you need to test

Image here: https://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/imag...ThermoFan1.jpg

30 and 87 are connected together, like turning on a switch, and that activates the starter motor

85 and 86 are what TURN ON that switch, and where your problem is, one needs to be a ground and one needs to be 12v to turn on the switch
The 12v should come from the ignition switch, when key is turned to START
The ground should come from PATS if key passes the test

86 is a ground with key on, so PATS is OK

85 is the problem, if no 12volt with key turned to START

That 12v comes from the DTR sensor on the side of transmission

There should be a Pink wire and a Tan/red wire on this DTR sensor, along with several other wires

The Pink and Tan/red wires need to be connected together by the Sensor when transmission is in Park or Neutral position

You can unplug the DTR sensor's connector and use a jumper to connect pink and tan/red wires together, then see if it will start with Key

Would this mean pink and brown wire could be bad?

If key is ON(run) then yes PCM relay should click if unplugged and plugged in
Starter relay shouldn't click until key is turned to START

You said starter relay 85 and 86 were 12v and ground thats why I said it should click when plugged in

What "brown wire"???

Tan/red wire?

If Pink wire, at DTR, doesn't have 12v when key is turned to START, then you are back under the dash to the Clutch by-pass plug, above brake pedal
And also fuse 24 in cab fuse box

We have gone thru this a few times, I don't mind its just typing for me, but you must be getting frustrated by this

Ignition switch(12v in START)-------(Red.blue wire)-------fuse 24------(white/pink wire)-----By-pass connector----(pink wire)---------DTR------(tan/red wire)--------------starter relay

I am getting frustrated, sorry to have made this go on for months. I’m not too good when it comes to electrical stuff.

Yes, tan/red wire.

slot 86 has ground. So pats is working.

30 and 87 have 12v/ground.

No 12v at slot 85

i checked alignment of dtr. To double check and it is fine.

Well if you unplug and jumped the DTR then alignment wouldn't matter

So pink wire doesn't have 12volts in START

Then tan/wire to slot 85 is bad, or the socket for that relay is

In my diagram for 1999 start circuit, I show 85 being the GROUND, and 86 being the 12volts with key turned to START
Ford changed the around all the time, 85 and 86 are interchangeable, as long as one is a ground and the other 12v the relay works
So just double check 86 is a ground with key on and NOT a ground with key off

86/87 have ground only with key on. 30 has 12 lv all the time and 85 has nothing.

Then you need to get a new wire from DTR to 85, so replace the tan/red wire, trying to find a broken wire in a harness is very hard, but......................

Wire issues are usually at connections, so if you pull up the fuse box and have a look at the tan/red wire where it connects to slot 85 that may be where it failed
