Transmission shifting Trouble

hey all,
just a question about my transmission. I drove my ranger for 2 hours then shut it off for a few hours. when i started the truck again, the transmission would not shift out of first and my speedometer did not work. i changed the battery and checked every fuse in the truck. everything was fine. my question is is there anything i am overlooking? a friend of mine said he had the same issue and it was something stupid that you wouldent normally think off. any input would be greatly appreciated.

98 ford ranger 3.0 v6 automatic

thank you

chad

most likely speed sensor in rear end like alljackedup stated. check the resistance of the sensor should be between 800-2500ohms.
