Replaced fuel pump now hard to start
I recently had my fuel pump replaced by a 'professional' recommended by a friend. Soon after I got it back the gas/filler cap light came on and has been on ever since. Also, starting the engine has taken longer. I have to turn the key and run the starter for 5 or so seconds, four or five times before it seem like gas makes it to the pistons. Once the gas makes it that far, it starts right up and runs as good as ever. It seems like i am having to turn the engine longer and longer each time I go to start it.
I have looked for obvious leaks and can find none.
Could the filter (replaced last summer) have gotten clogged by debris from the fuel pump replacement?
It seems like I need a check-valve in the fuel line to keep the gas from draining backwards? That is how I interpret the problem anyhow.
Any thoughts?

OK, never mind. This same problem is discussed in https://www.ranger-forums.com/2-9l-3...ng-help-16177/

Your should bring the truck back to the mechanic that installed the pump.
He should have insisted that the fuel filter get replaced with the new pump.
If you have a defective pump, many manufactures will not warranty the pump without proof of a new filter getting installed at the same time as the pump.
BTW you never mentioned the year of your truck or what engine it has.
If you plan on diagnosing this problem yourself, you will need a fuel pressure gauge.

Try cycling key on and off 3 times then try to start
If it starts faster then yes Check Valve IN the new fuel pump is not working.
Clogged fuel filter symptoms is stalling out at higher speeds, as fuel demand goes up clogged filter can't pass enough fuel so engine literally "runs out of gas", but it would start and idle fine, low demand.
